can anyone tell me the best way to get from hoi an up to hanoi - are flights expensive/often or is a train the best idea?

Try Pacific Jetstar flight Danang/ Hanoi . Danang is a short distance from Hoi an. Dec all in fare is about us$30+, maybe cheaper than train. but then you save on a nite accommodation when you travel by train. However, getting a taxi at the Hanoi train station is an awesome experience if you are not prepared for touts and rigged meters.

I'd go for an overnight train, but as KPTham1 says, flight is also very affordable.
