Yes and there's another one in Mong Cai, past Halong Bay. All border crossings on official www.vietnamtourism.com website. Yunnan province is like SE. Asia, with new and modern cities, great countryside, colourful minorities and very good food. Try to escape Chinese holiday periods. One of my favourite destinations. You need a visa !

thinking of passing into China whilst in Northern Vietnam!??? Any advice / ideas???

You've got the two crossings -- Lang Son in the far north and Lao Cai in the northwest -- both are popular with travellers.
As I've never been to China so can't help more than sorry!
