Ok im living in Hanoi and would like to travel over Tet but was wondering if this is possible or whether the country virtually shuts down for the week?

We can't really tlak with a lot of experience having only spent 2008 Tet in HCM and travelling through to Cambodia.
Our observations were that it was an amazing experience to be in HCM during Tet. A number of shops/restaurants etc. closed down in the days preceeding and over actual Tet. It didn't impact on our travels too much as we travelled via Sinh Cafe after leaving HCM but we wouldn't have given up on the experience for the small inconvenience!

Sre you can travel, but book any transport arrangements, eg train tickets, as far in advance as possible -- like about now!
