thanks rohan, on seat61 it does not refer to a stop in phan thiet, ive read a few bits on a possible "luxury" train from hcm to phan thiet but i cannot get any confirmed details! do you know if the train detailed on seat61 stops in phan thiet?
thanks again
lee.

Did you particularly want to go by train?
As you indicated, there appears a train to Phan Thiet... Go look here:
http://www.vietnamtourism.com/e_pages/useful/useful.asp?uid=2256
Alternatively, you can take the Reunification Express to the (very) little train station of Muong Man. As the journey takes between 4-5 hours, you'd be best on the S6 or S8, go here to see:
http://www.kimtours.net/Transport/train_timetable1.htm
(pity the English version of VN train website doesn't have all this!!!).
In both cases, I'd imagine you'd have to use local transport to get to Mui Ne. But, at least you'd see the countryside.
Cheers

The closest train station to Mui Ne is at Muong Man -- which is around an hour from Mui Ne (and about 45 minutes from Phan Thiet). This is why most people travel by bus from Saigon to here and northwards.
I'm not sure if that special express train is still running (the 5* express service from Sgn)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, others appear to sometimes suggest otherwise.
