I am traveling to Vietnam for three weeks in May - heading to HCM City from Cambodia. I had planned to head up the east coast but have recently been recommended a trip to the beaches of Phu Quoc island. Could you tell me the best way to get to the island, and also any recommendations whilst there - guidebooks have been scarce on information so far.

    Hello,

Tried to get to Phu Quoc a couple years ago and flights were very limited and sold out well in advance. Friends who did make it to Phu Quoc via Vietnam Air said it was a great experience.

    Good luck!

I made it there a couple of years ago. I was on the Mekong Delta tour and the guide helped arrange me to leave the group at the correct time.

I think it was at Rach Gia, or else I took a motorcycle to the local bus stop and then a local bus to Rach Gia. Anyway, that bus ride was a bit sketchy. But looking back it brings a smile to my face and a hope that I'll never do that again.

From there I took a boat (hydrofoil?) to Phu Quoc. Bartered a motorcycle ride to the resorts, and had a nice stay at the Tropicana. It was low season so it was pretty quiet. Might have agreed to $25 a night for multiple nights. The beach was nice, comparable to Lonely Beach on Ko Chang, Thailand (the only other tropical asian beach I've been on). Look into a flight unless you don't mind a similar method to what I did. Some resorts may have airport pickup.
