I am travelling from Ho Chi Minh up to Hanoi and am looking for a beach to chill out on for a few of days in Jan/feb.

Just need cheap $5-10 basic bungalow, decent beach for swim, sunbathe, a place to have a cheap feed.

    Any suggestions welcome

Check out Hoa's Place at China Beach near Da Nang. Top spot. Also Jungle Beach north of Nha Trang is very backpacker orientated.

Somtam - would you recommend China Beach over Hoi An then? We are travelling from Hanoi to Saigon and wanted to break the trip mid way for a night or two.

Quy Nhon doesn't have bungalows, but otherwise fits your bill perfectly. It's located 230km north of Nha Trang, south of Hoi An.
The beach is quite nice, and the entire place is relatively untouristed. We literally had the entire beach to ourselves during the daytime, and then late afternoon all the locals come out to swim and play football and such.
There is a backpacker's place, called Barbara's, otherwise plenty of the standard micro-hotels.

Those other beaches are nice (so long as they've recovered from the tropical storms that ravaged them a little bit ago), but heavily touristed...

Really doubt if you'll get a bungalow for that price - maybe a hostel bed? The advantage of Hoi An over China Beach is that you get much more than a beach. Hoi An gives the best value for accommodations due to heavy competition, and some of the best food in the country is in Hoi An and Hue. China Beach is just that - little more than a beach. The two are close enough to each other so you could compare for yourself.
