Mekong Delta

  • brinner

    Hi,

I will be in HCMC tomorrow for 2 days and then have 2 days for a Mekong Delta tour. Can anybody recommend a tour company?

Also, we are travelling into cambodia (Phnom Penh) and was wondering if we would save time by going on from the Mekong delta rather than back to HCMC and then onto Phom Penh?

    Cheers
    Brian.

    Hi Brian,

Delta Adventures is pretty good (they're a couple of dorrs down from Vinh Guesthouse on De Tham St in Pham Ngu Lao)-- though pretty much any of the big players (Sinh, Kim etc) except TM Brothers is probably going to be ok.

You can organise a tour to take you all the way through to Phnom Penh (via boat and the Chau Doc crossing -- faster and more interesting than returning to Saigon.

    Hope that helps

Thanks Somtam. I will let u know how I get on and hopefully I can recommend a decent tour. I am going to look at Delta Adventures, TNK Travel, Sinh and Kim. I agree with you on TM Brothers, not very good.

Also I need to add some other posts regarding places to stay and tours in Vietnam.

    Many thanks
    Brian.

    Hi steviej,

Many of the guesthouses in Phnom Penh offer this -- along with many travel agents -- you shouldn't have much trouble tracking one down.

I met someone in Can Tho who had paid US$36 for a three day all inclusive (except for beer ;0 ) trip - went Phnom Penh - Chau Doc - Can Tho - Saigon. Most pax do the trip the other way, and he commented that the crowds had been low

    WOW....................

................US$36. Now that's what I call value for money.

Mind you, did he have to make up the 'Paddle Crew' ;-)

    Sorry to hijack this...

I will be doing the Saigon - Mekong Delta - Phnom Penh route in November and I don't have a lot of time for it. I was wondering if you think it would be better to do an organized tour from Saigon - Phnom Penh (through the delta) or to go on our own (time-wise). Also, is it the same price to go Saigon-Phnom Penh ($36)? How long does it take?

I know, I'm sorry. So many questions! Thanks!

    Hi halu,

Well it is pretty quick doing it with a tour -- you won't be able to cover as many spots and activities by yourself as doing it with a group -- depends where you're planning on going I guess.

Price in the reverse is roughly the same -- if not cheaper.

    Hi,

I looked at several tour operators. Sinh, Kim, Delta and TNK Travel (which is recommended in the lonely planet), all of which are on the same street De Tham St in Pham Ngu Lao, so it's easy to compare.

They pretty much all do the same schedule and Delta Adventure came in the cheapest at $33, so we went with them.

We did a 3 day tour. I would recommend these. For $33, it includes all transport and they bring u to lots of places such as the floating markets, rice making and cocunut candy making and accomodation is included. it's a bargain, you get to see lots of things with the floating market in the morning being a particular highlight. Also what I liked is that the food is not included so yo can go off and do your own thing (if you want) for food.

The tour guides are nice and helpful and they sort out your visa for you at the border (obviously not included in the price of the tour).

    Wow! Thanks!

That sounds great, we might just do that one! It takes you all the way to Phnom Penh?

    How big are the groups?

    #12 Posted: 7/10/2006 - 01:41

  • brinner

Yep it takes you all the way to Phnom Penh. The groups are not that big.
For a 3 day trip there were 9 in our group. But at the start there is more as they do 2 day trips and 1 day trips also.

    Hi Brinner,
I know you posted your last message in October but better late than never!
Two quick questions re your tour with Delta Adventure...
    1) Was the tour 3 days, 2nights or 3 days 3 nights?
    2) What's the accommodation type - and how good is it?

Thanks so much for your advice

    Lucy

    Hi Lucy,

It's a 3 day 2 nights trip. I was with my girlfriend so we stayed in doubles.
The accomodation is ok. It's not amazing but is fine. Similar to the other gusthouses that you wud stay in in s.e. asia.

    Hope it helps

    Brian
