Warning! Mekong tour hell
6th February, 2010
Stay away from any Mekong tour under the umbrella name of Mekong Tours. We have had the misfortune to have booked onto a Mekong Tours 3 day delta trip from Chau Doc to HCMC. We have been travelling for 5 months and this was the worst experience we had. The tour was booked from a hotel in Chau Doc and took in My Tho and Can Tho before arrival in HCMC. The tour is split between 2 or 3 companies each day and no one seems to take responsibility for the passengers. We had the tour change arrangements at the last minute and miss out whole sections of what was promised in the guide. We were misinformed as a matter of course and lied to about travel arrangements and meeting/leaving times. 3 of us were nearly left behind but for our fellow travellers intervening. We had booked a 3 day trip and should have been dropped at our hotel for the 2nd night but instead we told to get off the bus at a cafe somewhere near My Tho. When we refused to be left behind with no guide, no hotel and no idea of where we were, our 'guide' threatened us and the fellow passengers and it took a huge verbal discussion to get someone from the tour company to come and sort it out. We were left in a shoddy hotel and told we'd be collected next day. We got the tour but were again passed on to another bus company to be taken to HCMC. Not only was the tour not delivered as described but the manner in which we were treated was abysmal. It was plainly obvious that we were considered as walking ATMs there to service the guides and not the other way round. One of the companies that took us on the 3rd day were called TNK travel and have an office in HCMC, there other companies declined to be identified other than though the banner of Mekong Tours.

Sadly this behaviour is all to familiar!
The best recourse is thru the internet with quality forums such as Travelfish (n spamming!) - there is really nothing much that can be done except to stay away from bad operators!
My opinion is that less than 10% of first time visitors to Vietnam every return! this is if you take away Overseas Vietnamese returning for family. There is something like a 50% drop in foreign tourism to Vietnam since end of 2008 - yet at the same time foreign tourism to Malaysia has increased in spite of global economic problems!
Please keep posting messages and informing people about the truth - this is the only way that things improve for everyone!
