Is it possible just do do a day trip to Halong Bay or should you allow more time to see it?

A longer trip is better, mainly because of the transit time involved in getting from Hanoi to the bay (a few hours each way). The single-day trips tend to be very rushed. If time allows, two days with an overnight on the boat is good, three nights with one night on the boat the other on Cat Ba Island better.
