I was most pleasantly surprised to find the Especen Hotel at 28 Tho Xuong Street in the Cathedral District (close by Hoan Kiem Lake). The $25. room I had was the best of my recent trip, a safe and interesting neighborhood, and most pleasant hotel staff. If you want something special and like lots of light/balcony included, you'll go for this hotel. my photos on my blog at http://sea2009.travellerspoint.com

This sounds really nice. Is it the kind of place you might meet people too? Does it have bar area or somewhere communal?

Sorry, no bar or restaurant. Sounds like you might like Hanoi Backpackers Hostel because they have a bar, and I always see a crowd of people in front. This hostel is just around the corner from the Especen:
