Hey we're on our way to Sapa and planning to head into Laos via the Tay Trang border near Dien Bien Phu. We dont have any Laos visas and we dont wanna head all the way out there and find we cant get one? Anyone been across this border lately or have any advice it would be much appreciated. Cheers

Lao visa on arrival has been available at the Lao side of the Tay Trang border crossing for the past ~3 years, for citizens of countries that qualify for it. don't know your nationality, so...

yes to NZ & Oz. should be ~USD35 (varies by nationality), pay in USD, or pay an inflated price in other currencies - at border crossings, 'official exchange rate' is defined as the exchange rate decided by the official who issues your visa/stamps your passport.
btw as of mid-Dec 2009, Muang Khua had 2 banks (guidebooks still say 1), but not sure if the newer one will change VND to kip (the older Lao Development Bank does). bus from DBP usually arrives in MK long after both banks have closed for the day.
