I got a visa "letter" for Vietnam from www.myvietnamvisa.com you fill in your info and pay online and then they send you a letter which you print out and bring to the Vietnam airport when you arrive. It gets you a visa on arrival. You can pay to have the letter expedited.

There is no Vietnamese consulate in Chiang Mai. You can get a visa via a travel agent but they will send your application and passport to Bangkok and charge around 2000 baht or 60USD. Better to do as above, get a pre-approved visa via an online agent, or if passing through Laos or Cambodia first get a Vietnam visa in Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, etc. Cost at these embassies/consulates is about $40/50/60 for 2/next/same day service.

There is a Vietnamese consulate in Khon Kaen, Isaan, not far from the Lao consulate, near the eastern mainroad going straight from the bus terminal east. They do visas in about 2-3 days. The address is Thanon (= street) Chatapadung 65/6, phone 0 4324 2190.
