Hi everyone,
I will be travelling through Laos in April of next year and plan to go South to Si Phan Don in order to travel over land to Cambodia (this was recommended to me in another forum). After looking up border crossings from Laos to Cambodia this seems trickier than I imagined. The forums I was reading were quite confusing and i was wondering if anyone could simplify the easiest/quickest way to cross the border? It was saying to book it through a travel agent in what I was reading, but the article was from 2009 and I am having troubles finding a more recent one! If anyone could simplify this process for me a bit it would be very helpful; I will be trying to get to Siem Riep to begin my travels in Cambodia.

You can find any number of agents on Don Dhet (including your guesthouse) that will arrange for you to get a ticket on a bus from Si Phon Don into Cambodia - all the way to Siem Reap or PP. Some buses, once they get you across the border as a group, you'll disperse into different buses going to different locations, though there are buses that you hop on leaving Pakse who do a pick-up at Si Phon Don and go onward travel down to the above mentioned locations. I didn't do this myself, but I'd talked to a number of people who in recent years have had no problem with this setup.

Easy peasy, I did this five years ago and it's gotten better since with paved roads and visa on arrival in both directions. Just pay about $15 from Don Det / Don Khong to Kratie in Cambodia (good stopover point). At the border you change bus/minvan and get the Cambodian visa for $USD20 plus $1-2 for bullshit fees (bring photo, pay directly to uniformed immigration officials, not some dodgy tout offering "service"). From Kratie you can see the dolphins and get a licensed bus to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap etc.
