I have just realised that I cannot get a visa at the border crossing between cambodia and laos !!!

How easy is it to get a Laos Visa in P.P.

easy -- just go to the Lao embassy in Phnom Penh and you can get it there.

No, from memory it was a next-day service, though I'm not sure. You may be able to pay a little more for some kind of express service...
