I will be travelling from Thailand to Laos in November and would like to cross overland via Chiang Khong-Huay Xai, so that I can do the 2 day slow boat trip to Luang Prabang. I was just wondering if they issue visa's on arrival and how much it costs?
I've been on a few websites and they all seem to have different answers - some say you need to get it in advance for $50 in Chiang Khong and some say visa on arrival. also some say 15 day and some say 30, so I'm a bit confused!!

Visa on arrival is available and valid for 30 days. Cost varies depending on nationality, but is generally around the US$30 mark.

A bus from BKK? There's no direct bus from the airport but there is a direct bus from Bangkok to Chiang Khong . From Mo Chit bus terminal there are two buses daily that go to Chiang Rai and on to Chiang Khong. One leaves at 07:00 and the other at 20:00. The cost is around 650 BHT. The journey takes around 13 hours so it's quite a long trip. From the bus terminal in Chiang Khong it is a short tuk tuk ride to the boarder. The visa for Laos is available when you cross, no need to get in advance, I think it was 30 USD.
