my old guideboook says the crossing from Tay Trang - laos was due to open soon... which means it should have happened by now!
questions:
1. is it open for foreigners?
2. has anyone done it and if so, how is it?
3. any idea how long and what stages to allow to get to it from sapa?

if not, how about getting hanoi-laos via the nam xoi/na maew crossing?
1. how does this work out time wise and any recommendations on transport?

any advice is much appreciated!

This is often referred to as the DIEN BIEN PHU crossing.

It is open (for almost a year) and facilities are still developing. There is transportation on either side of the border.

Don't forget GET YOUR VIETNAM VISA BEFORE HEADING FOR THE BORDER!

There is an ATM in Dien Bien Phu.

If your 'old' guidebook is an LP it is as almost as good as the latest as they only update a few things each year. The bad information often remains year after year.

Hi fishtails, the Border and visa crossing FAQ has most of the info you're after.
