I'm off to SEA this summer. Thanks for this useful website, I've got a lot of info about my upcoming journey! However, I still got some question about my itineraries. My planned last stop in Thailand is Mae Hong son and then I want to head for Chiang Khong directly.
Is there any bus service avaible between these two cities?
How long does it take to travel?
According to some info, it seems that I may have to transfer in Chiang Rai. Can I arrive at Chiang Khong from Mae Hong son in one day?
If I plan to stay in Chiang Rai for a night, am I able to catch the boat from Huay Xai next morning?
Thanks for ur patience to browsed through my lengthy questions.
I'll appreciate if you give me some suggestion!
cheers
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
To my knowledge, there is no direct bus service between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Khong -- while you could travel by bus vis Fang and Tha Ton this trips takes longer and will involve slower connections than just returning to Chiang Mai.
The fastest way will be to return to Chiang Mai and head back out from there. There are more frequent buses from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai than to Chiang Khong, hence probably the suggestion of switching buses in Chiang Rai.
Doing Mae Hong Son - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai in a day is a bit of a haul, though is you start first thing in the morning, it may be doable.
If you overnight in CHiang Rai you'll miss the morning boats from Huay Xai.
Another option you haven't mentioned is to fly from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai then take the bus up -- it is an affordable flight.
A further option is to investigate private minibus services in Mae Hong Son -- there could well be direct minibuses run between MHS and Chiang Khong by individual guesthouses.
Hope that helps!
