There is no Lao consulate in Chiang Mai. There are a few travel agents in Chiang Mai who will process your Lao visa application for you for a fee, but I think you'd be better off applying for a Lao visa either where you are now before you depart if you have the time, or while passing through Bangkok. That way you should be able to get a 30-day visa for sure.
The other, as well as the least painful option, is to get a visa on arrival at the Lao border at Houei Xai. Check out some of the previous posts in the visas section of the message board for more details on that. Assuming you are travelling on a UK passport, it will cost you US$30 (or 1300 baht) and you'll get stamped in for at least 15 days (we got 30 for some unknown reason). Then, if you need to extend for another 15 days, you can do that while passing through Vientiane on your way south and onward to Siem Reap. If you do make it to southern Laos, don't forget Wat Phou. It will be another great warm-up on your way to Angkor.
How goes the training? He he? It's all Beer Lao and World Cup here!

Hey again exacto! I think i'll probably just get the laos visa as i pass through Bangkok, i'd rather have the full 30 days guaranteed before i arrive, do you know how long you have to use the Laos visa once you have it? But think i'll get the Cambodia one 'on arrival', unless: do you know if it's tha same deal with Cambodia as it is for laos i.e. shorter stay if got an arrival?
On my list of things to do is to research temples in Laos so thanks for the head start!
Am being very slack with training at the mo, i'm using my time to see friends instead as i've only got 4 weeks till i leave Manchester for good, eek! This weekend will be spent sunning and drinking and world cup watching, he he he! I'll work on my fitness when i'm stuck on the isle of wight in the summer with nothing to do!
Cheers mate, peace and love, Danny J
