You cannot get Vietnamese visas on entry at the land borders -- you have to arrange it in advance. You can get it on-arrival at Hanoi airport though.

personally I'd just get it in advance in Vientiane.

You can only get visa-on-arrival in Hanoi airport if you have a stamped authorization doc from Vietnamese immigration. Don't expect just to show up and get a visa on arrival at the airport. Scandinavians and most asians don't need visa for up to 15 days. See visa section on www.vietnamtourism.com.

Be warned that Vietnames visa in Laos are quite expensive. In Vientiane we payed $50 at the embassy and had to wait 3 days. I subsequently saw them at travel agencies advertised for $45/$55/$65 for 3/2/1 day turnarounds. THey may be cheaper elsewhere in Laos I'm not sure.
