Has anyone done the Vientiane-Lak Sao-Cao Treo-Vinh-Hanoi route? Is it difficult/painful? Does the wet season make this a dodgy option? Where are the best places to stay the night (Lak Sao + Vinh?)
All advice gratefully received.

Hi Paul,
There's a couple of plces to stay in Lak Sao and the road from the Mekong up to Lak Sao is sealed throughout. On the other side, organising reasonably priced transport from the border crossing to Vinh can be a bit more of a challenge -- try to cross with a group to be able to get a more affordable rate.

Thanks.
Do you know if it is possible to get from Lak Sao to Hanoi in one day or do you need to stop the night in Vinh?

A train from Vinh to Hanoi takes around 7-8 hours depending on the train, so if you got into Vinh early afternoon you could probably jump on a night-train north to Hanoi.
