Just a quick question. Is it possible to bus it from Chiang Rai early enough to get to Chiang Khong/Huay Xai and get on a slow boat to Pakbeng in the same day?

think Chiangrai-Chiang Khong buses start running at 6AM (best to confirm at bus station beforehand), depart every half hour till late afternoon, journey time ~2.5h. then short (

think Chiangrai-Chiang Khong buses start running at 6AM (best to confirm at bus station beforehand), depart every half hour till late afternoon, journey time ~2.5h. then short (10min) tuktuk ride to immigration at other end of Chiang Khong, so should be possible for you to reach the border in time to meet the rush hour (~8-10AM) crowd of tourists crossing the river & queueing for visas & currency exchange on the Lao side. then another short tuktuk ride (or long walk) to the slowboat landing. slowboat departs late morning, actual time not fixed but most reports say ~11-ish AM. along the way you might encounter this guy who will deliver a lecture on why you should travel to Luang Prabang by bus instead - believing what he says is entirely optional ;)
(realised that typing the mathematical symbol for 'less than' results in all text after that symbol vanishing...)
