We are travelling up through Vietnam and don't really want to have to go south again to cross to Laos. Does anyone have any advice on what would be the best/most northern border crossing to Laos as we were hoping to cross after going up to Sapa in Vietnam, taking into account time and terrain.

Hi Georgie,

If you haven't already, take a look at the FAQ about border crossings -- you can read it here.

Undortunately the crossing near Dien Bien Phu is the closest for you in Sapa but it remains closed to foreigners and you will not be able to cross there.

The Nam Can/Nam Khan crossing (south of Hanoi, see map on above-mentioned thread) is probably the handiest as it takes you into Laos near Phonsavan -- of the two northern crossings, this is the more commonly used one, though the Na Maew/Nam Xoi one is further north.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. Had read the FAQ but wanted to check if there were changes to Dien Bien Phu.
