Whinge

Posted by RobertLittle on 12/9/2007 at 08:13

Why is all the text on this site doublespaced? It makes it a pain in the arse to read. So I will doublespace everything that I type here just to get my point through. While I am whinging away. I can't say I really like the organisational structure of the information you have on the site. It isn't the easiest to navigate. But I have to say some of your information is very good and the design is very nice. Much nicer than my shitty looking site. A lot of work has been done here a ...

Your travel guide reviews

Posted by someguyinasia on 7/9/2007 at 13:33

I don't want you to take this the wrong way. I like Travelfish, like it a lot, and while I've found your travel guide reviews good reading, I'm wondering if you're really in a position to throw stones? After all, there's still large parts of the region you don't cover, and I'm sure there's some mistakes in the coverage you do have, so I'm wondering if you're in a position to really start calling errors in the books you read? I mean that in the nicest possible way of course! If I've m ...

Hotel & other business owners - please read

Posted by somtam2000 on 5/9/2007 at 17:07

We're getting an increasing number of fake posts by businesses pretending to be guests. We consider posts like this to be spam and they will be deleted. I thought adding a link on the bottom of every page of the Travelfish site reading "How do I get my business listed on Travelfish?" would have been sufficient, but reading that section appears to be far too complex an undertaking for some businesses. So once more for the dummies, posting fake reviews and recommendations for your business ...

Backpacks

Posted by pezza on 17/7/2007 at 21:33

Found this site yesterday and haven't stopped visiting it since - good work guys! I'm going travelling in SE Asia in November for 3-4 months and require a decent backpack. Does anyone know of any trusted backpack review sites? I'm not going to be doing any mountain climbing. Many thanks, Pez ...

Anyone speak Italian?

Posted by somtam2000 on 10/8/2007 at 21:52

An Italian travel website TripMagazine has something about Travelfish on it, and despite my living in Trieste for two years, my Italian is about as good as my poached eggs -- not good at all. If there's any Italian travellers out there reading this, I'd love a translation of the following: "Insisto con google e mi ritrovo su Travelfish, indubbiamente il miglior sito oggi in circolazione quando si tratta di fare ricerche nel sud est asiatico. Travelfish non tradisce: hanno una mappa interat ...

Blogs we like

Posted by somtam2000 on 25/1/2007 at 06:45

There's a squillion travel blogs out there and they're only growing in number, but we'll be using this thread to recommend good travel blogs we stumble across ... they're easier to find when they link to Travelfish -- hint hint ;-) First off the rank comes Backpackstorybook -- a great little blog with some top pics and some pretty useful surfing advice for those thinking of catching a wave in Vietnam. They've just finished their trip through SE Asia and finish with this very good advice: " ...

Daypack - what to use?

Posted by karynelder on 6/8/2007 at 18:00

Hello - My husband and I are traveling through SE Asia for six months soon. We are each taking a 40-45L rucksack, but are struggling with what to use for a day bag. Is it a better idea to use a small backpack, or a messenger-style shoulder bag? We would like to try to optimize safety/security, but minimize the whole western tourist thing at the same time! Any tips/suggestions would be really appreciated. Thank you! ...

43 hours from Washington to Jakarta - beat that!

Posted by somtam2000 on 4/6/2007 at 22:44

Our good friend J just hobbled into our humble abode in Jakarta after a marathon 43-hour epic from Washington. The original plan had held for Washington -> Newark -> Singapore -> Jakarta, however after arriving in Newark, she was told her plane was "broken", and she ended up flying Newark -> London -> Singapore -> Jakarta. As a final touch, the airlines lost her bags. So what's your airline horror story? Please do share and help J feel a bit better! ...

Hotmail and msn email addresses no longer accepted by Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/5/2007 at 14:32

We're no longer accepting hotmail and msn email addresses for new sign-ups due to hotmail incorrectly filtering these activation email as spam. In doing this, the activation email is not delivered to the hotmail or msn address and so it is not possible for the recipient to activate their account. While this will not affect existing members with hotmail or msn email accounts, new members will not be able to sign up unless they provide an email account with a provider other than msn or hotmail. ...

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/4/2007 at 23:14

We've (finally) got the Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Travelfish Guide available for purchase over in the ebooks section of Travelfish. Apologies for the ever retreating release dates, but we've finally got it done and we think it will be worth the wait! 18 A4 pages, five maps and over 25,000 words of condensed travel intelligence. It also includes coverage of the Con Dao Islands. All this for just US$3.95 -- less than the cost of a cab to the airport! To those who tried to buy the guide earli ...

A note of appreciation

Posted by marianwarren on 19/4/2006 at 16:46

Dear Somtam I check in every day or so and really appreciate the current info - which saves me having to ask questions about subjects where I need a little clarity. Your itinerary suggestions were fantastic and I will use them as a general but flexible outline. Many thanks and keep up the good work. Both your and the other contributor's experiences are helping to iron out those pre-trip new country uncertainties. Hope your efforts are financially beneficial and if I have any $$ left after this ...

Travelfish redesigned - not an April Fools joke

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/4/2007 at 14:38

We're rolling out a redesigned version of the Travelfish site, so this isn't a belated April Fool's joke... Readers may get the occasional error and old versions of pages as we upload the sections and fine tune them -- please accept our apologies in advance for any inconveniences. Why a redesign? We're hoping that the new site will make it a little easier for readers to find what they're after -- there was just tooooo much clicking on the old version. We're also introducing a few new sect ...

That's not a monsoon -- THIS is a monsoon!

Posted by somtam2000 on 5/2/2007 at 12:52

When we moved from Phnom Penh to Jakarta, one of the first things we noticed was the incredible tropical climate here. The humidity was off the scale and the whole place felt like the jungle was itching to take the city back in a moment. Likewise when wet season came it was like "Wow, now that is a real monsoon"... So if you've been watching the news over the last few days you will have noticed that Jakarta got the floods pretty bad...it sure did! We were lucky -- our house is two floo ...

We're looking for a couple of Thailand-based travel writers. If any of the following sound familiar, then we'd love to hear from you. 1) You love to travel 2) You need to look at every flophouse in town before settling on a room 3) You draw up a sketch map of most spots you visit 4) You travel with sixteen guidebooks, hate them all and know you could do better 5) You write bar reviews on the back of coasters 6) You write long letters to your Mum and when you get home she says you should ...
