Travelfish profiled in TheNextWeb

Posted by somtam2000 on 15/12/2013 at 19:30

Heya, If you're interested in some of the background behind Travelfish and what a typical day is like for me, I've been profiled (along with a bunch of other self-employed people) in a feature on TheNextWeb by Jon Russell. Some of the others are also doing some pretty interesting stuff. Cheers ...

Private messages - Please read

Posted by somtam2000 on 3/10/2013 at 20:16

Hi all, If you use the private messaging system on Travelfish, please note that you need to reply to any messages VIA the private messaging system on the site. Do not reply to any email you receive notifying you you've got a private message -- if you do, that email just goes to a generic Travelfish account and the recipient will never get wind of it. If you receive an email telling you you've got a private message, you need to click on the link, and go to Travelfish to reply to it -- only then ...

Mapping disabled on iPhones and iPads - sorry!

Posted by somtam2000 on 2/10/2013 at 19:51

Hi all, due to some issue with iOS7 we've had to disable any maps with icons to the iPhone and iPad. So for example while our slowly growing map of Yangon should display the hotel markers on it if you look at it on your desktop or laptop, the map won't show on your iPhone or iPad. Sorry about this -- we're waiting on a fix or workaround for the problem. CHeers! ...

Server dramas

Posted by somtam2000 on 12/6/2013 at 07:33

Hi All, Just a quick note to apologise for the server collapses we've had over the last few days. These hamsters I tell you, it's like herding cats. The problems (which we're still trying to figure out) have been complicated because I'm in Burma (super crummy internet) and my server admin star has been waylaid moving house... perfect storm and all that. So, we're busy affixing bandaids and supplying extra hamster food and hope to have these problems sorted out if not now then as soon as I'm o ...

Idle banter & Culture politics moved

Posted by somtam2000 on 12/9/2013 at 21:38

Hi all, I've removed these two forum sections from the homepage feed meaning their latest topics will no longer appear on the homepage of the site. If you've an interest in keeping up with them, they can be accessed directly via the forum homepage here and by the respective thread feeds here: Idle Banter - Culture & Politics. Cheers ...

Call for comments: We have redone the weather section

Posted by somtam2000 on 30/8/2013 at 08:46

Just a quick heads up that we're in the process of a big reworking of our weather section, and now all the sections are topped with a map up top that you can click on to see when the best time is to go somewhere and be given links for more information and so on. You can see the main Thailand page here. We've only marked a few points so far, but the plan is to add more as I have the time to write them. Any suggestions (and corrections please!!) much appreciated. You'll also see that we have cl ...

Site wishlist

Posted by somtam2000 on 19/3/2013 at 22:29

Hi all, We've recently taken on a resident programmer to assist me with getting the site shipshape. We've been working on the site's back-end over the last few weeks to make it easier for us to get the content onto the site and now that that is almost in the bag, we're shifting focus to the front-end of the site -- ie what you all see day to day. So, if you have any features added to the site, be it small or large, please post it into this thread so we can take a look and prioritise what we're ...

Quick post box

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/8/2013 at 19:27

Just a quick note we've added a quick post box at the end of the latest posts bit on the homepage as people occasionally get in touch telling me they can't figure out how to post. Hopefully this will make it clearer and easier. Please note that you need to select which section of the forum you want to post to from the dropdown -- until you select one you can't post your question (as otherwise we don't know where to post your question). Hope this is of use to some. Cheers ...

Starting a new Thread /Conversation

Posted by razztravel on 22/7/2013 at 11:24

Well done to TravelFish for a fantastic site! Couldn't figure out how to start a new thread till I realised you are using the term post which normally means a message or reply added to a Thread (or Conversation). May I suggest that "Add a new post" is a standard way of saying reply or add another comment. But starting a new thread or conversation is saying you are starting a new subject with it's own posts/replies. Bravo! Travelfish :o) ...

Travelfish turns 9

Posted by somtam2000 on 12/7/2013 at 03:16

Hi all, Another day, another year, almost another decade. Have put together a wrap on the last year over on my personal blog -- may be of interest. Perhaps the most important bit: "Well first and foremost it has seen our slowly growing membership continue to work to make the site the great resource it is. Thank you "” every single one of you "” even those who drive me a little mad." That would be all of you forum regulars -- thanks -- and should you make it to Bali, ple ...

Server downtime Saturday June 15, 2013

Posted by somtam2000 on 13/6/2013 at 09:52

Hi all, Just to let you know Travelfish will be offline for a chunk of time this coming Saturday June 15 as we move the site to a new server to try and address the performance problems we've had in the last week or so. I can't supply exact times at this stage sorry, as we're waiting for the new server to be provisioned, but once that is done I should be able to supply a time block -- ideally it will be a 6-8 hour block in the middle of Satuday GMT +8. Apologies for any inconvenience, but we th ...

NEW: Free travel guides from Travelfish

Posted by somtam2000 on 14/5/2013 at 22:09

Delighted to announce the release of our first full colour free travel guide -- to our flavour of the month, Flores/Komodo in Indonesia. These new guides look their best on the iPad as we used iBooks Author to build them, but we've also generated PDF versions in hi-res and low-res flavours which means people will also be able to use them on their smartphones and other tablets. There are also printable versions (again in hi- and low-res) which contain the exact same information, but have a diffe ...

Giving back in Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 30/1/2013 at 22:15

Just a small announcement, we've added a new section to the Feature Stories section of the site titled "Giving back in Southeast Asia". What is happening is every month a Travelfish.org writer selects a charity or non-government organisation that they believe does excellent work on their patch in Southeast Asia. They write about them and we donate $100, a small way for us to give something back to the region. If you're looking to give back too, please consider giving a little cash as ...

Minor change in member posts section cc Thaibeachlovers

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/1/2013 at 03:25

As suggested by @Thaibeachlovers, I've changed the layout somewhat on the "latest posts you've made section" (need to be logged in to see it) so that at a glance you can see the latest posts you have made and also if anyone else has responded to them. I've not extensively tested this on other platforms (like phones for eg) so if you get something weird happening, please let me know. I'd never considered laying it out this way, but, for those who don't want to get email notifications o ...
