Burma travel FAQ Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 9/1/2013 at 21:10

This is a (very much work in progress!) collection of links to useful threads in the Burma section of the forum along with other parts of the site. We'll update it as more interesting or useful stuff appears. Currently there is no destination guide for Burma on Travelfish. If you know of another interesting resource worth adding, please mention it in the comments. Burma or Myanmar? Here at Travelfish we use Burma rather than Myanmar as does Aung San Suu Kyi, but there are many takes on it. Here ...

Travelfish on Burma (Myanmar) Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 17/10/2008 at 09:24

I've just added a new section on the messageboard for discussion of Burma (Myanmar). This isn't to say we're planning on adding coverage of Burma to Travelfish, as we're not, but given there's the occasional post about it, it makes sense to have them all in one place for the benefit of all. If there are any Burma experts out there who'd be interested in putting together some kind of a Frequently Asked Questions thing on Burma to post here in the messageboard, please drop me a line at stuartmc ...

Looking for partners for trekking & festival in Chin State!

Posted by egorbaty2 on 10/2/2016 at 01:40

A friend and I are looking for 2 more people to join us on a trek to remote villages in Chin State, followed by the Chin National Day festival where tribal people from all over the state come to celebrate their heritage, performing traditional dances. We have found a local trekking agency that gets great reviews and offers this trip for half the price of competitors. The trip is 14 to 21 February, departing from and returning to Bagan. What can you expect? According to the guide, "the most ...

Travel Agent Recommendation for Burma / Myanmar

Posted by RJB2288 on 3/2/2016 at 09:15

Hello - I'm looking for recommendations for a travel agent that can both plan, coordinate, and book a 1.5/2 week trip for some friends and I in Burma. We would like a mix of both the main attractions and cool, off-the-beaten path locations. Also, we don't need to stay at super fancy places and would like to keep costs down. I normally like to plan things myself or just go day by day, but this is a last min trip so I don't have much time to research and I'm going with a bigger group than norm ...

2 week-ish itinerary for vetting...

Posted by geo_shack on 17/1/2016 at 04:57

Hi folks. My other half and I will be travelling to Bangkok in Mid April with about two weeks to be spent in Burma. We are away for 3 1/2 weeks in total, but he wants to spend some time in Thailand too, as he's not been before... We're both late 20's. Not interested in partying but like the odd beer break to punctuate sightseeing! Easygoing travellers...I wouldn't usually worry about an itinerary but just want to make sure most is made of time in Burma with travel time being quite long bet ...

Burma extension of visa

Posted by kandpfishos on 16/1/2016 at 17:03

G'day I am disappointed. Travelling to Burma September 2016 on an Aussie passport and was planning to get the 28 day tourist visa with an extension of another 14 days. The AU Myanmar Embassy informed me that they have been advised this month that no visa extensions will be possible, at all. Is this correct? Is it just in AU, before I leave, that I cannot get the extension? What about in Burma itself? I don't want to cut the planned trip back really. Thanks for the advice on current situation. ...

How to get to Southern Myanmar and its Beaches

Posted by relaxedTrev on 20/11/2013 at 09:26

The 2013/14 summer is the first time in 50 years that overland travel on along this lush coast has been permitted. Here is how to get there....by intercity bus, flight, train or boat. Before you ask, unfortunately the Mergui Islands are still restricted to those with prior permission from Nay Pyi Daw (as at Nov 13), but the mainland has plenty of history, culture and barely discovered beaches for the adventurous to enjoy. Maung Ma Kan, Nebule, Myawyik Island, She Moe, Palaw beaches just to name ...

Off the Beaten Path Cafe Yangon

Posted by GildGomes on 6/1/2016 at 09:18

First , if you ask the taxi driver to drop you off by the Chatrium Hotel you will have to walk like 10 min, better to stop by the Hotel Esperado ( google for some reason shows different). Park charges MYK 200 entrance fee. I was expecting a travel cafe ( as it is advertised ) to get some information but there is no wifi , no books around and no drinks on the menu, only Myanmar beer. Also there was only one couple there. When I asked for the bill only the food was listed, with the tax and the beer ...

Bangkok to Yangon - advice

Posted by iciclesecret on 21/11/2014 at 04:52

Hi all, I land into Bangkok on 26th December and would ideally like to spend some time in Thailand until New Year... perhaps Ko Phayam, but open to ideas! I fly out of Yangon on the 17th January. Seems to be so many options to explore in Burma, I'm a little overwhelmed. What are the must see and dos? I'd love to experience the best of the food, the people, river cruises and possibly beach huts by the coast, as well as ideally Bagan and Inle. Not as fussed by major cities, and I think that ...

Itinerary Advice?

Posted by rabbit45 on 22/12/2015 at 19:57

Hello all, I'm new to Travelfish - having exhausted a lot of the information over on TA. Husband and I are early 30s, active, interested in local culture, nature, and food. This is our first stop on a two month trip. I'm looking for some feedback on our late June/early July itinerary to Myanmar. Would you add or remove days anywhere? Does the order make sense? Any advice on the best way to travel between destinations? I'd be interested in any worthwhile side trips or any other cities to h ...

Internal Burma flights? & money?

Posted by FernR on 10/11/2015 at 10:04

Does anyone have current information on the best way to book the well-traveled internal Burma flights? (I'm looking for Hanoi to Yangon , Yangon to Bagan , Bagan to Inle Lake, Inle Lake back to Bangkok.) Is there still a Discover Myanmar pass? Is it possible to book this all online, or do I need to go through a travel agent? Also--what's the current story with money in Burma? Still need to bring crisp unwrinkled US dollars, or possible to find ATMs and use credit cards? I've looked all ...

Travel round the Ayeyarwady region

Posted by adgilcan on 30/11/2015 at 07:42

Hi all I am planning a trip to Pathein and other towns in the Ayeyarwady region. Apart from Pathein, it is well off the beaten track and I can't find any information on it. I wondered if anyone on this esteemed site had any knowledge or information on where to stay in the following towns: Kyonpyaw, Kyaunggon, Panatanaw and Myaungmya. I will have local help but in terms of planning, I'd like a vague idea of what is available. Many thanks for any help you may be able to offer. ...

Dawei is overlooked

Posted by DaweiBeach on 28/11/2015 at 04:28

I have been to a lot of places in Myanmar but the area surrounding Dawei has easily been the best. Of course it is all up to what you like personally, but since I am into exploring things by motorbike and also like beaches and nature, the Dawei area is second to none. In fact I don't think that I liked any area inSouth-East Asia as much as the Dawei area. You could probably spend weeks inthe area and not run out of places that are worth exploring. There are beaches everywhere, north of Da ...
