Crossing land borders and travelling by bike in Burma

Posted by ewcyna on 21/10/2013 at 04:24

Dears, I am about to travel by bike in Asia and definitely want to visit Burma. I was happy to hear about a few land crossings open but then the information is a bit unclear to me .. and I am busy doing my planning now. Well, the question is: can I enter Burma, travel there by bike and leave country by land crossing, too? I know I have to obtain visa beforehand and it is for 28 days only. Thank you in advance for your help! ...

Mandalay to Bagan to Inle Lake

Posted by igormozzilli on 6/2/2014 at 04:33

Hello, 2 questions I'm looking some infos to plan my trip between, as the topic title say, Mandalay- Bagan -Inle Lake. Anyone knows how much the ticket for the boat from Bagan to Nyaung U and where to buy the ticket? I know there are some different options, a tourist boat faster and expensive and a "normal" boat, I'm looking infos on the second one. My second question is how to get in Inle Lake from Bagan/Nyaung U? is there a Bus or a Train and what do you suggest? Thanks guys for ...

UK bank and credit cards in Burma - a warning

Posted by antoniamitchell on 6/6/2014 at 08:41

Hi everyone, I've just found out from one credit card supplier (Halifax) that they block use all their cards in Burma. I can't use the card at all (either for purchases or for cash advances) in Burma. I'd already called my main bank (Santander) a few days ago to tell them I was going abroad to Burma, and they registered my trip for both my bank card and my credit card and said I was all set. But because of the Halifax problem, I decided to call Santander back and double check - just to be safe. ...

How much cash?

Posted by cblackie on 7/6/2014 at 04:07

Hello all I'll be travelling to Burma for two weeks in July. I have booked and paid for all but a couple of nights accommodation through Agoda, have paid in advance for three internal flights and will have more than one Australian Visa/Mastercard/ATM card with me. With that in mind, and considering how rapidly the situation with financial services (credit card acceptance, ATMs, etc) is changing, I'm wondering if any recent visitors to Burma could offer any advice as to whether I'd still be wis ...

Myanmar itinerary: Which one?

Posted by Marin on 28/8/2013 at 10:36

We are planning a trip to Myanmar in February 2014. We have by now decided which places we would like to see, now it's just a matter of combining them all and placing them in the right order. A travel organsation will arrange the transport, which will probably largely consist of domestic flights and some airconditioned vans/mini buses and a private guide to show us around the sights (and we'll have some time to ourselves as well). Our initial itinerary is as follows*: * I haven't specified any ...

Flight from Yangon to Mandalay

Posted by jbrey99 on 22/5/2014 at 11:40

Anyone have any flight info on Yangon to Mandalay? I hear Air Bagan is the best, and searched that they have flights at 6am and 8am. But I'm unsure of the cost for a one way ticket for one person. Do you arrange this the day before with a travel agent? Thank you! ...

Burma for 10 days

Posted by ashorcha on 16/5/2014 at 04:58

Hey guys, really need some advice about Burma. I've been on the road now for 9 months and generally played things by ear but with a friend joining me for a certain time and my flight home being later than hers, it leaves me with about 12 days to spare in Asia and I don't know where to go. By then I'll have covered everywhere else in south east asia but Burma, should I go? My friend leaves me in Hanoi and then 12 days later I fly from KL home. Direct flights to Yangon from Hanoi are expens ...

I will be heading to Myanmar at the start of June, and I will be crossing at the Mae sot-Myawadi land boarder. I understand that the road from Myawadi to Hpa-an alternates in direction every day. Does anyone know what direction is used on even and odd days. Thanks. ...

Opinions on tourist boat from Bagan to Mandalay?

Posted by antoniamitchell on 27/4/2014 at 03:10

Hi all, I'm off to Burma in June, and was roughly planning a route from Yangon - Pyay - Bagan - Inle Lake - Mandalay - Pyin Oo Lwin (if time remaining). However I've heard really good things from some sources about the ferry from Bagan to Mandalay. So now I'm wondering if I should change the route to go from Yangon - Inle (maybe breaking the journey in Taungoo or Meiktila/Thazi) - Bagan so I can take the ferry to Mandalay. However Taungoo or Meiktila/Thazi sound far less interesting t ...

Booking hotels through Agoda

Posted by apeiron75 on 20/10/2013 at 15:57

Hi all I want to minimize the amount of cash I have to bring around in my coming trip, and I noticed that booking hotels through Agoda will help as I can pay them by credit card and they will take care to send the money to the hotel. Anybody has experience if this actually works? Any flaw in the logic? thanks! ...

Restaurants in Burma - a food safety question

Posted by antoniamitchell on 22/3/2014 at 02:27

Hi, I've noticed a lot of posters giving their experience in Burma mention getting very sick. I've also been reading the wires and noted from this post about curries in Burma: "It'll have been prepared in advance, not cooked to order and not re-heated." I suspect that, and the amount of oil in some dishes, helps explain why so many tourists seem to get ill in Burma (although a large amount of oil should theoretically help keep the food safer by insulating it from the air). So my que ...

IMPT: New location for getting Burma visa in KL as of 14 Oct 2013!

Posted by busylizzy on 15/10/2013 at 21:19

As of October 14 2013, the Myanmar / Burma tourist visa processing services have now been outsourced to Ever Fine Travel & Tour (very close to the Masjid Jarmek LRT station) in Kuala Lumpur. You NO LONGER go to the Myanmar Embassy on Jalan Ampang Hilir. The good news: - the new location is much easier to get to, and find. - they will process your visa on same day! Drop off in morning (9.30-12.30) and pickup in afternoon (4-5pm). That gives you time to do a bit of sight-seeing while you ...

2 week trip to Burma in May

Posted by hugo on 5/1/2012 at 19:06

Hi Guys I'm looking seriously into a 2 week trip to burma from 13th to the 27th May this year. These dates are set in stone so my first question would be: Is it wise to be visiting at this time of year, so close to the start of the rainy season? I don't mind the occasional downpour but if it's raining 24/7 thats probably going to put a bit of downer on it. My initial thinking for a rough itinerary is: YANGON > INLE LAKE > MANDELAY > BAGON > NGAPALI > YANGON I'm aware 2 weeks ...

3 weeks in Thailand and Myanmar in November 2014

Posted by Edinburghgirl on 19/4/2014 at 12:59

Hi All My partner and I are planning the above trip for later in the year. We have both been to Thailand several times and spent time in Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket, Ko phi phi, Ao nang and various islands off of there. Ideally we will fly from the Uk directly into Bangkok and return from there also. We would like a few days at beginning or end of holiday in Bangkok as it's just so cool. We were thinking of going directly onto Myanmar from Bangkok and spending 10 days there visiting the sites but ...

Visa Help! (US Citizens)

Posted by roxchang on 13/4/2014 at 14:11

We are both US citizens and are leaving for Thailand on May 5th. We plan to fly from Bangkok to Burma (Yangon) around May 27th. The problem is, we have not yet obtained our Visa's to enter the country. We tried contacting the embassy but their office is closed until Monday 4/21. It seems like the process of sending in documents and waiting to receive the Visa's by mail will take too long (10 days for processing alone) before we leave on May 5th. Is there a faster way to obtain the Visa's? I hear ...

From KL to Yangon: visas and flights

Posted by SweetVirginia on 7/4/2014 at 20:01

Hi. We are new to Travelfish and new to Asian travel. We are embarking on our maiden voyage next month, flying into Singapore on May 26th and out of Bangkok on June 19th. Our original idea was a shotgun, exploratory approach: cover a lot of ground, get a good overview, and identify places to return for more in-depth visits in the ensuing summers. As usual for us, we changed our minds. After spending two straight weeks on a steady diet of Travelfish, we have now decided we must visit Burma. We ...

Visa to Burma from London

Posted by Joanna_S on 10/12/2012 at 06:40

I sent my and my sister's visa application to the Burmese embassy in London two weeks ago (10 working days) and still haven't heard from them. I checked the royal mail tracking system and it seems like nothing has been sent yet. I tried to call the embassy today, but there was no answer and their voice mails are full, so you can't even leave a message. I'm getting a bit anxious now. Is this normal that it takes so long? ...
