Itinerary help! Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand Feb 2016

Posted by SnowBird888 on 14/12/2015 at 20:42

Hello! New here. My trip (I'm a 30 year old solo female traveler) is rapidly approaching and I haven't put much of an itinerary together, so I'd like some help/advice! I fly into Saigon, arriving January 29th, flying out of there on February 28th. I know that isn't long enough to see all of what each country has to offer, but I'm hoping to get a nice taste of each. I'm more interested in history, culture and nature than I am in partying. A very rough itinerary: Arrive into Saigon, spend a week ...

how much time for Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia?

Posted by edi on 20/12/2015 at 15:37

hi, I have 4, maximum 5 weeks off. I would like to see all these four countries - Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. As I know it may be too little time to see all of them thoroughly, I thought of seeing just the northern parts of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and the western part of Cambodia. The Halong Bay and Sapa as well as Angkor temples are a must see for me. The itinerary destinations are pretty close to each other, so i guess i would spend as much time on getting from one place to an ...

Beach or island SEA late August with family...help!

Posted by northland on 12/12/2015 at 11:18

Hi, we are a Canadian family with kids from 7 to 16 planning a trip to SEA in mid August. We'd like to start with a nice beach or island, preferably with good snorkelling/diving, not too busy. This is our first August trip so the monsoon has me stumped! We plan to go to Angkor Wat afterwards so Bangkok seems like a good hub but we're open to ideas, thanks and hope to get some good ideas ...

Is it an issue for someone with asthma? 2. If you think it's a bad idea for someone with lung issue, do you have a ...

Posted by jimbojh on 3/12/2015 at 09:39

Hi, I will be flying to Vietnam (Hanoi) on June 11th with a few friends. I understand that this is monsoon season in the majority of places in southeast Asia. We have only booked outbound flights, and have between 4 and 5 months to do everything so I'm pretty sure time is not a problem here. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zjQZ23-p65K4.kMrSeZeCBAYI&usp=sharing I have linked a copy of a google maps with a very rough itinerary. Of course this is just me looking at different destination ...

2 Weeks around SE Asia

Posted by jacquelinem28 on 14/11/2015 at 17:55

Hi! I am planning a two week trip around SE Asia for December (I know, late planning). We plan to start in Seoul and then fly over to Indonesia (Bali most likely) first? Would this make the most sense? Where do you recommend to fly into? I was thinking that it would probably be best to get an international flight out of Bangkok back home... (I'd like to do the Gili T Islands, maybe Ubud?) then do Cambodia (Siem Reap and Phenom Penh?) then Thailand (Bangkok and maybe 1 island.. Koh Tao). Unfortu ...

43 day backpacking

Posted by wal431522 on 16/11/2015 at 16:54

Next summer I am going backpacking in Southeast Asia. We're flying into/out of Bangkok, with a total of 43 days in between. We're wondering how foar "outward" as in, into Myanmar/Burma and Cambodia, we should travel, to insure enough time for us to get back to Bangkok for our flight. We are comfortable with visas, so that's not a problem, the only question we have is are we going to be spreading ourselves too thin making a loop through all three countries? How should we handle our tri ...

travel health

Posted by broy on 18/10/2015 at 10:21

My wife and I traveled Southeast Asia quite a bit in the 70s and 80s. Since then my wife had her spleen removed and as a result has to deal with a compromised immune system. Malaria is a particular risk. We thought about traveling to Malaysia in January/February but recently read that the incidence of dengue has doubled in the past year. Not deadly but certainly not a lot of fun. I realize that there is no such thing as "risk free" in the tropics but wanted to get travelers opinions of ...

Expats dying in Southeast Asia

Posted by somtam2000 on 25/10/2015 at 22:11

Khmer440 has a solid piece on expats dying in Southeast Asia which is well worth a read. It certainly rings true to me and very little to argue with in it. "One day I was sat next to a South African nurse on a bus to Battambang. We spoke about the curtailed longevity of many expats living in Southeast Asia. As we headed across the sunbaked plains of north western Cambodia, I think we concluded that expats make a decision subconsciously or otherwise, to trade the lifestyle here for a shorte ...

Not booking return flights for 4/5 month travels

Posted by jimbojh on 14/11/2015 at 06:00

Hi, I will be travelling to SE Asia from UK in June, but am undecided how long I want to go for as yet. I will be returning between October and November but the question is does anybody have any experience booking the return long haul flights whilst over in south east Asia. This would give me ultimate flexibility and also mean that I don't have to dish out as much now for both legs of the journey. Any suggestions... ...

Indonesia needs Jawas

Posted by somtam2000 on 10/11/2015 at 19:01

From this week's newsletter: I was watching Star Wars (the original) the other night with the kids and they got asking after the Jawas - who were they, where were they from, and what did they do for a job. I settled on "scrap collectors" as a catchall for their occupation and our high year-old daughter asked, "So if they're the recyclers, does that mean everyone else are dumpers, like in Bali?" According to numerous media reports through 2015, Indonesia is the second bigges ...

Can someone help trouble-shoot my itinerary? (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar)

Hi all, I'm wondering if someone could quickly trouble-shoot my itinerary; I'm just about to start buying tickets, and would be extremely grateful if someone could just eyeball my itinerary and make sure we're not doing something stupid. I've got: Dec 23: Fly into Ho Chi Minh City (Overland thru Mekong Delta to Pnom Penh. Boat to Siem Reap .) Dec 31: Fly Siem Reap to Vientiane (on Lao Air?) Jan 3: Fly Vientiane to Luang Prabang (Lao Air?) Jan 5: Fly Luang Prabang to Hanoi (Lao Air?) Ja ...

Experiential things (cooking, art workshops, etc) in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma

Posted by FernR on 3/11/2015 at 08:31

Hi all, Our family (two parents, 22-year-old, 19-year-old, 15-year-old) are very big on 'hands-on experiences' while traveling; when we backpacked through Africa/Asia 20+ years ago, some of our best things were doing a batik workshop in JoJakarta, doing a cooking class, etc. So, in * Phnom Penh * Siem Reap * Luang Prabang * Hanoi * Burma (Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake) Are there any particularly phenomenal experiential things (that preferably aren't prohibitively expensive)? Best tips f ...
