2 weeks in Laos on my own?! Sticky!

Posted by cig on 20/10/2008 at 15:05

Hi, what a fantastic website! have been reading non-stop. Heres my dilema... I will have 26 days to explore Thailand and Laos in Jan, I especially would like to see much of Laos. I start off in Phuket ( Islands/beaches etc) will take overnight train to Bangkok. Then off to Kanchanaburi - Ayutthaya, then an overnight trip to Chiang Mai. I would then like to spend a good amount of time going through there and into Laos. And finishing up by taking the train from Vientiane to Bangko ...

The Laos slow boat thread Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/1/2008 at 16:28

Hi all, If you have done the Huay Xai - Pakbeng - Luang Prabang boat trip by slow boat, please post in this thread when you did it and a rough idea of how many people were on the boat with you. This is to give other readers who are weighing up doing the trip an idea regards to overcrowding on the boat. As always, my humble thanks! ...

Favourite place in Laos? Sticky!

Posted by BigRoss on 23/5/2009 at 23:17

This is a post with very little practical value. Laos is my favourite place in the whole world, and I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that. I wonder which places in the PDR are other people's favourites? I have two I can't split: The Katamtak waterfall and Mr Boune Hom's Bungalows on Don Dhet. The falls are really not very impressive compared to some, but they are so deserted and such a bugger to get to, that being there is really quite special. Certainly you've proven your trail bike riding ...

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End Sticky!

Posted by christay2009 on 23/11/2009 at 02:45

My Northern Laos Trip: Beginning to End I travelled around Northern Laos for just under a month from the 29th September onwards, moving fairly slowly south through Laos beginning in Luang Nam Tha and ending in Vientiane. This is more about information than sharing stories of my trip. Border Crossing I travelled from Kunming (capital of Yunnan province, China) to Mengla, where buses run to the border and beyond. There is a direct, overnight sleeper bus [more than one] from Kunming to M ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have to ...

Laos visa extension & an ATM in Champasak - FYI

Posted by robney on 5/2/2016 at 01:24

Hello, this is an FYI - when we got our 10 day Laos Visa extension at the Immigration Office a couple weeks ago in Vientiane, there were travellers who expected they could get the Extension the same day they applied but were told they that was not possible & were quite upset. Immigration said all extensions take one day, we picked ours up the next day. They did mention something about going to the Airport but did not hear it all. Also was in Champasak yesterday and they have a BCEL ATM, ...

Champasak to Pakse - bus/taxi/tuktuk

Posted by robney on 29/11/2015 at 18:33

Hello, we plan to fly out of Pakse at 12:00, does anybody know if there are buses/tuktuks that leave Champasak to Pakse early in the morning so we can be at the Pakse airport before 11:00? I've heard the trip can take 1-2 hours but would like to see if there is agreement. Any suggestions on best way to get there and cost could be appreciated. If we have to, we'll go to Pakse the night before to ensure we can get to our flight on time. Cheers! ...

South - north or North South, Advices needed

Posted by hhmarita on 1/2/2016 at 15:17

Hey, I am planning to visit Laos in February for 3 weeks (I do have 4 weeks but may need a week on some beach at the end). I arrive in Kuala Lumpur and will continue from there. As I really need to "chill" for the first week, I wonder if I should rather start in the south (4000 islands) or Luang Prabang. So it is either North to South or South to North. And as I am arriving in KL it is also a question of flying to Chiang Rai or Bangkok. Which way is more stressfull? I really need t ...

Traveling from Luang Prabang (Laos) to Mandalay (Myanmar/Burma)

Posted by Marimo on 31/1/2016 at 16:36

Hi! I could only find posts that was a few years old about this topic so I made a new one I am wondering if someone knows if it is now possible to travel by any other means than an expensive flight from Luang Prabang to Mandalay (Laos/Myanmar)? If I understand things right it is still not possible to cross any direct borders between Laos and Myanmar/Burma, but may it be possible to get from one country to the other via Thailand? Eg. Huay Xai to Chiang Khong (Laos/Thailand) and then M ...

December 2015: Luang Prabang - Nong Khiaw - Muang Ngoi

Posted by ttdub on 25/9/2015 at 23:37

My wife and I will be spending 8 full days in Laos in December. We fly into LP on the afternoon of the 25th of Dec and fly out of LP on the 3rd of Jan. Hoping to get some feedback on where to spend some of our time. We'd like to not feel too rushed, and would like to get out of LP for a few days and spend some time in the countryside hiking/cycling/kayaking/scenery/relaxing. Have read that Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi would be good options. We'll probably spend the first 3 nights in LP the ...

Posted by rabbit45 on 17/1/2016 at 13:51

Apologies to those of you who also lurk TA, I'm duplicating my post. Just not enough people posting on the Laos forum. Roughing out our two-ish week trip to Laos in July. Husband and I, early 30s, enjoy being active, nature, food, culture, adventure. I know it's monsoon season in July, so I'm not sure how realistic travel in Northern Laos will be, but here goes... * We will be entering from Chiang Rai, traveling first to Luang Namtha or Muang Sing (or both?) Here, we're interested in eco-t ...

Hi guys, I have one week from Dien Bien Phu to get to Bangkok. A have a flight back Europe from Bangkok. I read a lot about all the alternatives I have, and most suitable for me it seems to be the following journey: -> Muang Khua -> Phongsali -> Luang Prabang -> Vientiane From Vientiane I would take the train to bangkok (11 hours). I dont know exactly how many nights to spend in every location. I would also like to know a local guide in Muang Khua and also in Pho ...

Vientiane. Cost of a tuk tuk from southern bus terminal to airport and approximate journey time?

Posted by SBE on 18/1/2016 at 21:41

Hi, I'm getting an overnight VIPsleeper bus from Pakse to Vientiane and I want to go straight to the airport from the southern bus terminal. Yes I know, bit risky relying on a long distance bus in Laos to catch a flight but several people in Pakse have assured me that the new sleeper buses are very reliable and actually arrive on time ..... hmm that means they're unlike any other buses in Laos then! My bus is supposed to arrive in VTE at around 6.00am so it should, in the ...

Laos visa extension

Posted by scoopybombam on 10/12/2015 at 20:03

I want to stay in Laos for about 12 months, is it possible to get a visa that will enable me to stay longer than the normal 30 days. The cost of transport across the border, hotel, transport back and 1400 baht for visa for UK citizen is very prohibitive. Is there any way round this. I am retired, not working, with a 12 month Thai Retirement Visa. It takes a 10 hour very bumpy bus journey, an overnight stay and then a 10 hour very bumpy bus journey back at the very minimum. I am 68 and find the 1 ...
