Northern Thailand to Laos - advice much appreciated

Posted by Poohh on 30/6/2014 at 04:53

Hi all, At July 21st my visa for Thailands ends, so I need to leave the country. Since I'll be in the North, I thought it makes sense to pick Laos as my next destination. As far as I know now, the border crossing Huay Xai / Chiang Khong is the one to pick from Chiang Rai. But after that I'm in the dark....I don't wan't to take the slow boat, and the other option is the bus to Luang Prabang. As I understand, the latter is a really long and uncomfortable ride, and I wonder how others have des ...

Nam Ghong Provincial Protected Area in Attapeu

Posted by gregmccann1 on 19/6/2014 at 11:04

Does anyone know anything about a place called Nam Ghong Provincial Protected Area (NGPPA) at the very bottom of Laos along the Cambodian border? I've made a blog that contains some maps, one photo, and some information. As far as I know there are no roads into the area, no ecotourism, no conservation groups working there, nothing. It's 100,000 hectares and contiguous with Cambodia's Virachey National Park (see the maps and Google Earth in the blog linked above). I am wondering if anyone knows a ...

Hi Guys, I need to travel to Laos from Bangkok this weekend to get my working visa. I thought I would take the opportunity to make a small holiday out of it. If I travel Friday night, I will arrive in Vientiane Saturday Morning. I am unfortunately confined to Vientiane as I need to be at the embassy early Monday morning and I will need to pick it up the next day on Tuesday. I will be travelling back to Thailand tuesday night. I have heard there isn't a great deal to do in Vientiane. Does a ...

Direct bus from Hanoi to Vientiane : Road conditions?

Posted by Stellathediver on 11/6/2014 at 10:53

Hello, I was wondering if the roads are winding between Hanoi and Vientiane ? I know that going from Vientiane to Luang Prabang , the roads can make you very nauseous seeing as they go through mountains and are very windy. I was wondering if this would also be the case from Hanoi to Vientiane! I really hope not! Also, since it;s the rainy season that would be dangerous to drive through steep and narrow roads especially on mountains. Thanks. ...

Decided to go to Laos! - Having a hard time with so little time.

Posted by marianaamc on 4/2/2014 at 13:03

I posted some time ago, that I was undecided on weather to go to Laos or Malaysia. After some researching I decided Laos appealed me the most but as I started to research I also started to worry about the time I've got. I realized I was not counting some days, travel days to Bangkok and I've now booked my flights. So i have 13 full days to go to Laos and I was thinking about doing it overland, just the northern part of the country, going to nong khai and from chiang mai via night trains. My prob ...

Laos in 14 days with partner and child! Any suggestions?

Posted by BradleyK1972 on 12/2/2014 at 09:41

Hi Everyone! I'm new to this site and have only just discovered it. I'm addicted already and have just spent the last 3 or 4 hours just reading as much info as I can. It's great! Anyway... My partner and I are wanting to go to Laos for about 14 or 15 days starting in mid June and we would like to take our 8 year old son with us as well. There is so much that I would like to see but I don't want to get sucked into trying to see too much and then end up feeling like we've spent the majority of ou ...

Siem Reap to Luang Prabang via Vientiane

Posted by georgie150 on 2/6/2014 at 07:04

Hi there, 2 of us are planning on travelling from Siem Reap to Luang Prabang via Vientiane in the next day or so. We were planning on flying but the flights are about 230USD (left it very late to book). We can't really justify that cost so are now thinking of going overland via the following route: Taxi / bus from here (SR) to the border near Poipet, cross the border, get a tuk tuk to the bus station, get a bus to Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) then either a bus or train to Nonk Khai. From t ...

Multiple Entry Visa

Posted by Asheai on 4/4/2009 at 21:07

Does this exist? I want to enter South Laos via Cambodia, exiting Laos into Vietnam... then I plan on traveling up to North Vietnam and re-entering Laos in the north. Does this mean I need 2 Laos visas? How much am I looking at for a Canadian?... also, can you enter Laos from Cambodia and Vietnam without arranging visas beforehand? I heard that the Cambodia border crossing doesn't have this ability - so how long would it take and where would I get a visa if need one? ...

Motorbike mechanic in Luang Prabang?

Can anyone recommend a motorbike mechanic in Luang Prabang? I'm thinking of heading to some of the local big bike rental places and asking there - but I'd also appreciate any suggestions here as well. I'm looking to get a few repairs/tune-up/oil change done on my Honda Win before I head north and cross into Vietnam at Tay Trang and head towards Sapa. ...

Luang Prabang to Sapa: Particular route questions.

We are currently in Luang Prabang , planning to make our way north and into Vietnam (not the most direct route, but hopefully more beautiful). Through forum research, I have learned the following, but still have a few questions and would also love any clarifications or other recent tips: - Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw By bus about 4 hours & 80,000 K (boat no longer available due to dam construction) - Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi By boat about 1 hour & 25,000 K * Does this boat onl ...

2 new places to recommend near Luang Prabang

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 6/4/2014 at 12:48

Returning recently from Luang Prabang, I'd like to draw attention to 2 rewarding places to visit, which you don't yet learn of from guide books. 1) The Butterfly Park, next to Kwang Si waterfalls, opened only some weeks ago and is a really delightful extra during a visit to Kwang Si. Its centrepiece is a net-enclosed garden, the air full of wonderfully coloured butterflies. The guide points out details of butterfly life all around you, the caterpillars, cocoons, and butterflies busy laying eggs ...

Medications over the border from Vientiane?

Posted by thinkstopthink on 25/3/2014 at 02:16

I'm in Phonsavan doing a volunteer project and it has taken longer than planned (surprise!) and I'm running low on two medications: Buproprion SR 150mg Citalopram 20mg I can't find these anywhere in Laos. Does anyone know of a pharmacy over the bridge from Vientiane in Nong Khai that I can get prescriptions from? Or maybe Bangkok Hospital in Udon? I know where I would get them if I was in Bangkok, but I'm lost in Nong Khai. Thanks! Jon ...
