China (kunming) to Laos to Thailand

Posted by ginger1 on 22/12/2010 at 22:32

Hi! I have been obsessively reading so many posts and forums my head is spinning. I've gotten a lot of info, but am hoping someone can help me out with my specific situation / criteria. My boyfriend and I want to spend the month of January going overland from Kunming (where we will arrive on new years eve) through Laos and into thailand, with the focus in thailand on ISLAND TIME! i've been in western china for too long. we are not opposed to a flight at some point along the way, but don't know ...

Transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng - Options?

Posted by jleetravel on 1/12/2010 at 14:44

First of all Id like to say thanks to all these amazing comments & feedback on this forum from some notable Laos travellers! Have gathered some great info for my trip end of this month! I have been trying to find info on other forms of transport from Vientiane to Vang Vieng other than the early morning buses ... as Air Asia has yet again delayed our flight schedule times and now we arrive 6hrs later than expected - and therefore miss the last bus that seems to be at 1:30pm in the aftern ...

Si Phon Don - which island?

Posted by caseyprich on 22/12/2010 at 09:01

Hey all, If I have the time after my trip through the Bolaven Plateau I thought that I'd unwind down in Si Phon Don. I've been reading up on the islands, and though the big island ( Don Khon g) sounds the easiest to get to and away, I think I'm more in the mood for one of the smaller ones (Don Khon or Don Dhet ). There is a lot of information available on both these islands - and though Don Khon is 'more Lao' I wonder if after traveling for about two weeks on the Plateau I may rather stay ...

SIlk store in Ban Xieng Lek by Luang Prabang

Posted by dgilland on 23/12/2010 at 10:31

I just returned home from an excellent vacation in Laos and Thailand, but I have discovered that a silk scarf that I purchased in Ban Xieng Lek has been ruined - the perils of living out of a backpack I suppose. Anyways, I was hoping to see if anyone knows the name of the store that I bought it from. It was a warehouse and storefront - 2 different buildings, and the store had 2 looms out front. It was maybe 10 minutes walking in from the edge of town, and the lady I bought it from handed me a c ...

Accomodation booking in 'Remote Southern Laos'

Posted by caseyprich on 20/12/2010 at 20:30

Anyone who has moved from Pakse into Tad Lo and beyond (Salavan, Sekong, Attapeu, Paksong) - did you find it was necessary to book accommodation in advance on the loop through the Bolaven Plateau or were there usually good spots open? Especially interested in Tad Lo as I hear it is becoming more of an option and prefer to stay with a view of the river. (oops! - late january early february) ...

Short trip in Nothern Laos

Posted by brighie on 19/12/2010 at 16:58

Hi everybody, I will be in Laos through Tay Trang around 30th December. I've two (maybe) easy questions: Is it possible to reach Muang Sing from Muang Khua in one day? I read that it takes around 8-10 hours with 3 different buses (Muang Khua --> Udomxai --> Luang Namtha ---> Muang Sing). It is best to do this trip with a private driver, isn't it? On the 7th of January we'll must take flight from LP to Bangkok (via Vientiane). I've many problems to book this flight from Italy ( ...

Posted by monesprit on 9/12/2010 at 01:33

Does anyone have any recent information about either of these routes/border crossings? Will be in northern Loas in ealy January and heading into Vietnam. We are thinking of leaving from Nong Khiaw and would like to hear any suggestions and information about crossing into Vietnam at either Na Meo or Tay Trang: eg. transport ideas, timing, places to stay or avoid. We will fly out of Hanoi at the end of January. Any ideas about best routes and suggested places to see along the way are appreci ...

I'm dreaming of a Laos Christmas and a sociable new year

Posted by jackymoon on 19/12/2010 at 11:35

Hello every one, It seems I will be spending the holidays in Laos. Which seems to me tobe a great thing. I think I will end up in Vientiane or Vang Vieng forChristmas, and certainly Vang Vieng for NYE. Sounds like the kind ofplace that I usually don't like to spend too much time, but I wouldvery much enjoy company since I travel alone. So my question is, whichguesthouses in those two cities would be recommendable for friendlystaff and good social atmosphere? Sometimes it is such a pain ...

Hey guys, I'll be in Laos next May and was thinking of renting a motorbike to take in the surroundings of the various cities that I'm in for some short excursions. I've thought of a few possible options and would like some feedback/comments esp from those who've done it before. a) First option would be riding to and around the Phou Khao Khouay N.P. near Vientiane. b) Renting a bike from Vang Vieng and maybe heading to Kasi c) Renting a bike from Phonsavan (im not really sure what's there i ...

Has anyone extended their visa? I'm flying into Vientiane and would want to organise my extension while i'm there if possible. I have 2 months to travel Laos and Cambodia and really don't want to be on any time restrictions for Laos. I have read in some places it is possible to extend it by a further 30 days. Travel info Luang Prabang -Luang Namtha-Mouang Khoua

Posted by jaschonaber on 17/2/2009 at 01:43

Hey there, Mid of March we're about to travel from Luang Prabang to Loung Namtha to do some trekking there. After that we plan to go to Mouan Khoua and enjoy a boat trip to Nongkhew and back to LP all in 10 days. I am already in contact with a local guy who does tours there but his offer seems a bit expensive. I would be really glad if you can answer me following questions: - the way from LP to LNT is about 300 km, is that possible in one day? - is it possible to book a local there ...

Itinary advice appreciated

Hello, What a great and very helpful forum! I am planning a trip to Laos and Vietnam for 4 weeks March/April 2011. With only 4 weeks there is far too much that i want to see, so am having trouble narrowing it down. I will by flying in/out of KL, definitely finishing at HCMC, however i am not sure, depending on what route i take whether to fly KL to Chaing Mai or KL to Vientiane. Below is my rough plan at the moment, if anyone could provide any advice as to 1) whether this will be realistic - i ...

Pak Lai to Vientiane by boat

Posted by mangosteen27 on 19/10/2010 at 14:49

Has anyone done this trip recently? According to the Lonely Planet there are boats going in the morning but they fail to say if it's every morning, and in any case the latest edition is well out of date now, so for all I know it's not even running anymore! I've heard that it runs every 2 days FROM Vientiane so would assume it's the same in the other direction - can anyone confirm, and if so, which days? Also, I won't have much time to hang around if the boat doesn't show up, so does anyone kno ...

Can you buy permethrin spray in Laos?

Posted by momof4 on 10/12/2010 at 00:04

How easy is it to pick up permethrin to soak or spray clothing against mozzies in SE Asia? I don't want to treat our clothes before we go since it apparently wears off after 6 weeks and that is well before we get to Cambodia or Laos and I don't want to be carrying bottles of the stuff around with us. So should I forget about it or will I be able to find some solution once we arrive? ...
