SE Asia in December - help this compulsive planner relax!

Posted by heidisueelvus on 3/10/2010 at 23:35

Hi Everyone - I will be in SE Asia for the month of December 2010. I have reservations in Hanoi and Luang Prabang at the beginning of the trip and on Phu Quoc at the end of the trip (Christmas) but no reservations for the 2 1/2 weeks in between. I would like to keep those weeks unplanned because I haven't decided how much time to spend traveling south from Luang Prabang in Laos, in Cambodia and in the Mekong Delta. I'd like to have the flexability to make those decisions while I'm there. ...

Itinerary help needed!

Posted by Millsze84 on 27/9/2010 at 13:49

Hello helpful travelers! I am planning on visiting Vietnam and Laos. I have been to Vietnam before and mainly want to go back to hoi an, and go through the Mekong to get to Phu Quoc. The aim was to keep my more conservative girlfriend happy by getting in some lazy beach time and do the hoi an thing so she can get some clothes made! Laos is for me! I'm after a little more adventure and would love to do some trekking and maybe some homestays with the usual attractions thrown in on the side. ...

Reitrement visa for Laos

Posted by MADMAC on 26/9/2010 at 21:57

I'm not planning on moving there, although the idea of building a salsa scene in Vientiane does have a certain appeal, but how does one obtain a retirement visa to live in Laos and what are the criteria? Does anyone here know? Or does Laos only provide long term visa's for people working there? I found precious little (surprisingly) on the net. ...

Vientiane northern bus station to move to Ban Dongnathong

For those planning to travel between northern Laos & Vientiane by bus: http://laovoices.com/2010/09/27/northern-bus-station-to-be-relocated-to-dongnathong/ http://laovoices.com/2010/08/31/new-location-for-northern-bus-station/ Not sure where exactly Ban Dongnathong is, maybe somewhere along the road that runs parallel to &behind the Wattay airport runway (where buses headed north make a stop to topup their petrol tanks before joining HWY13)? Anyway, tuktuk drivers will be in the know ...

Si Phon Don to Siem Reap

Posted by caseyprich on 1/10/2010 at 13:06

I'm looking into a trip to Southern Laos for 3 weeks this January/February. I figure a week for Pakse/Bolaven Plateau, I hear 4/5 days biking the Plateau is good time. Is doing that alone safe? Anyway, then I'd head down to Si Phon Don for a few days. My option after that was to take any extra time exploring northward until I have to cross back over to catch a return flight from Bangkok. However, I'm also considering dipping into Cambodia as I've always wanted to check out the ruins around ...

About 2.5 weeks in northern Laos - can I get all of this done?

Posted by Buzz on 15/9/2010 at 18:15

I'll be meeting up with a friend in Bangkok in early November (he's currently backpacking Japan) for exactly 2 months in SE Asia. We're not planning on much Thailand as I've been there before - mostly Laos and Vietnam, with a little bit of Cambodia. The plan is to get to Vientiane (either by air or by land, we'll see), arrange a visa to Vietnam while we're there, and head north. I wanna cross the border at Dien Bien Phu about 18-20 days later, so my final stop in Laos should be Muang Khua. ...

Big news for those heading to Laos: Stray Travel Asia are about to commence operating their bus tours to Laos and to get things off to a flying start, they're offering 50% off all tours till the end of November. Oct 10-19 Land in Bali after taking off from JFK on Oct 8 on a Qatar Air flight. I chose Qatar based on info from seatguru.com and other airline review sites. Hey, I am currently in Chiang Mai and want to head to Laos next week. Although I have seen many tour operators offering slow boat and speed boat services to Luang Prabang , I just wanted to find out if this was the best option? Can anyone recommend the best way to get from Chiang Mai to Laos? Is Luang Prabang the best place to go from Chiang Mai? Any other easier ways to get into Laos from here? Any advice is welcome! Thanks Jamie ...

Using Australia Dollars in Laos

Posted by aleaster on 19/1/2009 at 19:18

Hi I know that this has been touched on already but want to clarify the situation in Laos. I am hoping to only take Australian dollars in cash to Laos and change in the larger centres - Vientiane, LP and Pakse. Can anyone see any problems with this? Apart from carrying around a reasonable wad of notes. I will have a small amount of US in cash and travellers cheques but with the current exchange rate in Aust for US$, I would prefer to avoid a double conversion and giving more money to ...

Vientiane to Phnom Penh

Posted by bails87 on 31/3/2010 at 22:07

I'm planning to be in Vientiane , having travelled from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, in early to mid October. The next 'stop' would be Phnom Penh, so that I can travel over to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat before returning to Bangkok. What is the best way to get from Vientiane to PP? It seems there are or were various overnight buses (sleeper/VIP) that do the journey. But I'm not in any real rush, so would I better to break it up, say stopping for a day at Pakse before ...

Take no guidebook?

Posted by 5acrefarmer on 14/9/2010 at 18:17

Hi I've been lurking around Travelfish for some time and obsess with wanting to go to Laos. Recently I purchased the GT Rider map of Laos which I think is great, especially as it has so many maps of various towns. Highly recommended. I have always travelled with a guidebook but am wondering if I would need one for Laos. A combination of the free travel guides I downloaded here on Travelfish, the GT Rider map, researching Laos on this website before leaving home and then accessing Travelfish ...

LP first week of November

Posted by thehomebayboy on 7/9/2010 at 15:11

Hello comrades, I would like to visit LP in the first week of November but it seems the only hotels that are available (according to various and sundry booking sites) are ultra expensive. I'm looking for a decent, clean, centrally located place, preferably in the old quarter. Is it possible to do a walk in at that time of the year and get anything other than a basic guest house? Not that I'd mind, but my wife has rare vacations and expects a little more. I'm willing to pay up to 120 U.S. or the ...
