From Laos (either Vientiane or LuangPrabang) to Hanoi by car??

Posted by Asia2010 on 1/3/2010 at 05:53

Hi everyone, My friends and I are planning a trip around SouthEast Asia this summer, and are a bit stuck when it comes to reaching Hanoi from Laos. We've so far seen two options, none of which really suit us: - either take a Lao Airline flight to Hanoi which already costs about 110€ (although we're still months away!!) and does not seem to be one of the safest airlines - or take a 30+ hours bus ride across the border, when so many tourists report online that they've been ripped off ...

WARNING for cyclists and motorcyclists on the Phongsali Rd

Posted by somtam2000 on 23/2/2010 at 17:07

This morning on the road from Boun Neua to Phongsali I fended off an armed attack by two lowlife who, I believe, had followed me from Boun Neua. They set a trap where one hid and the other set his bike up like he had a problem with it. As I approached, he waved me down asking for help. As I slowed to a stop ( but luckily didn't turn off engine) the hidden guy ran outand tried to attack me with the butt of an AK47 but I was able to fight him off with my helmet (which I'd removed) and escap ...

Large denomination USD - accepted in Laos?

Posted by Bear on 28/2/2010 at 11:12

I am traveling in Laos and Cambodia this month, and want to bring enough USD with me to pay for the major expenses: visas * two persons for Laos and Cambodia, Angkor Wat passes * two persons, guide for Angkor, expensive guest house in Luang Prabang. Assuming a guest house bill is close to $100 or for two Laos visas at the airport, will a $100 USD bill be accepted? (If carrying $500 USD at the start of the trip, it will be so much easier to have a $100 bill or two.) ...

Laos ATMs

Posted by travelsalone on 25/1/2010 at 14:35

I apologize for the redundant question, but I am unable to find current information...some posts say there are not ATMs in Laos and another post talks about a Canadian using their ATM in Laos, but it is all old information (searched lots of sites). Please, I need to know if there are ATMs, and if not will bring baht (2 week visit)since that seems to be the most recommended currency (other than USD for visa). Thank you, and again, sorry for the redundancy... ...

Laos March/April

Posted by the_bending_unit on 4/3/2010 at 03:44

Hello everyone, we will be visiting Laos end March/begin April. We'll have 15 days. What are the best places to visit at that time of year (taking in account the weather conditions : hot, smokey,...) For now, we plan to go : Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and then Nong Khiaw or Luang Nam Tha (?) before exiting to Thailand. Can we go from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw via the river or will the water be to low? Will the climate at the Plain of Jars will be more comfortable co ...

Discovery Pass/ASEAN Pass/booking tickets from within SE Asia

Posted by Gabrielah on 27/2/2010 at 03:27

I would love to travel via train as it's my favourite mode of transport, but I have very limited time in Laos/Vietnam (2 weeks), so air travel it is. A couple of questions re Discovery Pass/ASEAN Pass/booking tickets from within South East Asia... I've found different rates when trying to book the Discovery Pass via Bangkok Air versus booking the ASEAN pass through Vietnam Airlines. The carriers on both ticket deals are the same, so I assumed the discrepancy was in name only, but it isn't. ...

Rephrased post: Is Luang Prabang + Hanoi too much in 10 days?

Posted by glomer on 26/2/2010 at 02:02

I posted in the Indochina forum a couple of days ago about honeymooning in Laos or Vietnam. Luang Prabang and Hanoi are our primary sites of interest, but I'm wondering if it would be too much/too scattered for our limited timeframe (I know there would be advantages to staying in one place). The itinerary I'm imagining would go something like: Hanoi - 2 days Luang Prabang - 6 days Hanoi - 1 day fly home... Any advice appreciated.... ...

Exchanging Kip before leaving Laos?

Posted by sl12 on 19/2/2010 at 00:54

Sorry if this seems like an obvious answer to most, but from what I've read I havn't been able to tell if you can exchange kip within Laos? Do you have to estimate how much you'll need while in the country and if you have some left over, too bad you have to spend it there, or can you exchange your kip back to baht or some other currency before exiting? Thanks! ...

Lao Airlines & ECCR

Posted by BruceMoon on 30/6/2009 at 10:17

Over the past couple of years, Travelfish observers have pondered whether purchase of Lao Iar tickets is best via the 'official' site (with all the hassles that that entails) or through the (apparently cheaper) agency located in France. Note that Lao Air are stating on their website that their relationship with the French 'agent' has been terminated: http://www.laoairlines.com/ It would be a brave person that now booked online through lao-airlines.com. Cheers ...
