A very quiet Thai island?

Posted by quaton on 11/1/2015 at 21:57

Hi all, Hope all you backpackers out there can help.......I'm hoping to find and "retreat" for 10 days to any island in Thailand that is traditionally simplistic and quiet. In other words, no or minimal tv, internet, simple bungalows with simple restaurant which is family run. Very simple, very basic with time to reflect. Cheers, Phil Perth - Western Australia ...

Advice for female solo traveller going to Thailand in November for a month

Posted by Natasha92 on 17/2/2015 at 17:43

I am planning on going to Thailand for a month in November. I have done research, however, there are still a few things I am worried about. I am planning to spend time in Bangkok, see some temples and have a Thai massage, then head to Chiang Mai by the overnight train. I would like to see some temples, go on a cooking course and go to Patara elephant farm whilst I am in Chiang Mai. I am then planning to go back to Bangkok and get a flight to Krabi. Whilst I'm there I want to go to Railay beac ...

Thai Etiquette.

Posted by BuzzmFrog84 on 10/2/2015 at 21:32

I should have started looking at this much earlier. I've been looking at several different guides...blogs, youtube posts etc...to get an idea on greetings and such. I'm starting to get the basics of the wai greeting but I'd hate to offend someone and give the wrong one. I've also seen that you should bow and in some cases walk on your knees when it comes to passing the elderly. Now, I don't expect a walk-through on all of the etiquette I should know but any links or info would be incredibly ap ...

Stopover in Phrae or Phitsanulok ?

Posted by altmtl on 9/2/2015 at 18:12

Phrae or Phitsanulok? I think I asked a question along these lines months ago... but I can't find it. I want to break up my journey from Chiang to Loei/Chiang Khan - so I was wondering where most interesting place to stop for a night or two. Looking for guesthouses in the 300 - 350 baht range. I like markets, river towns, Places with a little life and walkable things to do during the day. P'lok sounds like a good option because I can go be 3rd class train and it seems to be more lively. Train ...

I'm in BKK and want to head over to Hua Hin for a few nights. Instead of being cramped in to a mini-van or taking the train (unexpected delays or whatever) I would prefer to just take a taxi their at my own leisure. Approx. 2.5 hour trip depending on traffic. If anybody wants to get to Hua Hin on Thursday 12th February and split the cost of the taxi please let me know. I plan to leave before noon. Food Poisoning in Thailand

Posted by altmtl on 6/2/2015 at 07:31

I've been to SE Asia many a time and have been proud to say I never got sick... but I guess there's always a first time. I eat pretty much about anything and always take ice cubes... and I never worry. The other night in Phang-Nga I had a simple noodle soup with pork and a beer... the next morning I was feeling a bit under the weather but the real symptoms started in the late afternoon, luck should have it that I was in my room (with my own bathroom) - vomiting, the runs and cramps - couldn't ...

Bus service from Nakhon Ratchasima to Laos

Posted by qifitness on 8/2/2015 at 04:00

Has anyone here made this trip recently and able to share information? I understand that there's now a daily bus from BKK to Vientiane that does stop in Nakhon Ratchisima, but can't find out at what time. Also, no luck finding out about booking. Since there's just one daily bus, it does seem likely that it could be full before reaching NR. So I'm wondering if it's possible to book in advance online (as with some Vietnamese bus companies). Any help appreciated. ...

Mosquitoes in April and May.

Posted by BuzzmFrog84 on 3/2/2015 at 14:58

I've been reading more about the mosquito situation. So far from the advice I've been given I'm going to wear long sleeves and pants in the evening and morning hours and wear repellent with deet. I'm wondering if I should just buy (if available) the repellent as soon as I land. It seems there are regions that are more of a threat, like Koh Chang, where I plan on going. I hear the risk is especially higher in May and closer to the rainy season. I'd rather not catch anything from these suckers s ...

Thai Tourist Visa Extension - Are days lost if you apply too early?

Posted by altmtl on 6/2/2015 at 03:42

Has anyone extended their 60 day thai visa (for another 30 days) recently? I'm getting mixed responses about this "losing days" issue if I apply too early for the extension... some say a month before is ok others say a week, others say a few days. In Theory you should lose no days at all as an extension is supposed to begin the day after your first visa expires. I assume they will tell you at the desk if it is too early before you apply? thx ...

Thai ATM withdrawal 30,000 baht... Which Bank?

I'll be in Ranong, Phang-Nga & Krabi, then Pai and Mae Hong Son Has someone done such a transaction recently? Please don't reply with a visa, mastercard or cash advance answer. - ATM ONLY - Which Bank? Does it depend on the branch? Yes I know 180 baht fee, ...

Price hike at some Thai national parks

Posted by somtam2000 on 3/2/2015 at 19:02

Richard Barrow has put together a handy reference chart of the price hikes at Thai national parks that kicked in on February 1. I'm not going to bother getting into the whole double pricing thing, as I've ranted about on many occasions before, but I am curious just how they come up with these prices. Take for example four pretty good national parks, which are all now 300 baht for a foreign adult Kaeng Krachan National Park Sai Yok National Park Erawan National Park Khao Sok National Park The ...
