Chiang Rai- worth the stop, cheap guesthouses and amazing food

Posted by nattbm on 24/12/2014 at 19:01

I stoped in Chiang Mai but i wss avoiding crowded places so i went straight to chiang rai which is much smaller. Got to a small and very nice guesthouse called Ban Lotus by recommendation, cause you cannot find it over the net or guide books. Is run by an elder lady who is a sweet heart, very welcoming, will make you feel like home. Is located in a small guesthouse area near the provincial police station at the end of santirach road, 15 min walk from bus station or 60 THB tuk tuk. The main roa ...

Posted by altmtl on 26/10/2014 at 20:39

All public parties in the Koh Pha-ngan district in Surat Thani province - except the full-moon party at Haad Rin - have been banned to "prevent crime and vices" - http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Full-moon-party-only-at-Haad-Rin-30246258.html See also: http://kohphangannews.org/party-zone/koh-phangan-police-will-propose-scrapping-half-moon-festival-black-moon-party-due-safety-concerns-1921.htm I was wondering if there were any islands where these bans are in effect (besid ...

Ko Bu Bu a winner

Posted by tezza on 16/12/2014 at 15:19

Every traveler is looking for a small tropical island with a nice beach only one resort. Even better if it is one BUDGET resort. Better again if there are no villages, roads or other development. Ko Bu Bu between Ko Lanta and the mainland can do this. I found it one of the most relaxing and inexpensive islands I've stayed on in recent years. Lovely family running the joint too. Rather than fill up space here where it will slip down the board and become ignored I've done a USER REVIEW with more ...

Calm down Fido or I willl go get my stock whip

Posted by tezza on 18/12/2014 at 03:23

Two weeks ago I decided I'd make my 4th visit to Ko Jum. The best sand/water is towards the south of Andaman Beach, an area I've never stayed before, so I decided to book into NEW RESORT - one of the 2 original Jum bungalow joints and tending towards the lower traveler end of the budget. It read up real well here on travelfish but my experience was somewhat different. I'm suggesting you don't stay at this place if you don't like being harassed by resort dogs, followed by being told it is all you ...

Underwhelmed with Maya Bay sleep-aboard.

Posted by tezza on 16/12/2014 at 15:36

I've done some great sleep-aboards in Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and Turkey so when I heard some dudes had an overnight version out of PP Don to Maya Bay, I jumped at the chance a few weeks ago. I was not whelmed. I found it uncomfortable and overpriced. The snorkeling was poor, the sights familiar, I got little sleep, rolled on my glasses and broke them and kicked my toe in the dark big time. I was worried I would get rained on when trying to sleep. If you think I'm having a big sulk you ar ...

Ton Sai Phi Phi still the wrong side of the shark

Posted by tezza on 16/12/2014 at 03:32

About a year ago I posted that Ton Sai/Loh Dalum at Phi Phi had jumped the shark - crowds, rip-offs, rampant development etc was over the top. Following my latest late Nov 2014 trip I judge it even worse. Note other parts of Phi Phi Don are worth a visit - I reckon areas around Long Beach and up the eastern coast can be pretty sweet. Ton Sai and Loh Dalum are further over the shark on account of: * crowds - I figured the Andaman as a whole was 50+% down in tourist numbers compared to November i ...

Ao Nang-Phi Phi and Phi Phi-Phuket

Posted by edost4 on 14/12/2014 at 19:53

Hey guys, I will be traveling one way between Ao Nang- Phi Phi and Phi Phi- Phuket and was looking for possible ferry options. My impression is that there is really only 1 boat doing these transfer, since any website I looked into it was the same time and length- 2 hours!.. I also noticed that organized trips offer a speedboat that does this distance in about 45 minutes, but it also includes the trip itself! So 2 questions, 1. What are the actual options in terms of taking this ferry (onl ...

Hello, my and my girlfriend will be starting our first trip when we arrive in phuket on Saturday night. We have a 34 km journey to the novotel hotel. Can any recommend a taxi? I've heard that it is possible to be ripped off but just wanted to make sure. Should I ask for a metered taxi on the night or try to sort something good out in advance. Any help or contacts would be greatly appreciated Regards chris ...

Ko Chang to Bangkok airport

Posted by cwoolston on 30/11/2014 at 12:03

Hi I am looking for a little advice. I planning to travel to Vietnam from Ko Chang in Thailand and have seen a flight which departs Bangkok suvarnabhumi airport at 15.20. I had been told the journey between Ko Chang and Bangkon is approximately 5 hours so was going to get the lonely beach minibus at 7am but now I look into it in more detail I am concerned that it may take considerabley longer than 5 hours. Can anyone advise on the journey time between Ko Chang and Bangkok airport? Thanks ...

Transport from Phuket - Koh Phangan and Koh Samui - Ao Nang

Posted by edost4 on 9/12/2014 at 18:50

Hey guys, I know it must have been posted already but I couldnt the answer. I will be traveling from Phuket to Koh Phangan for the New Years party on Dec. 30 and was wondering if you could recommend where to book tickets from for the travel (bus, ferrry combo or whatever). All flights are fully booked.. I know its suggested to buy tickets in advance, but I am only arriving on the 28th so that would mean taking a huge risk of not being able to obtain any tickets. For reference, I will be stay ...

Ko Jum to Ko Kradan - best way to transfer between islands?

Posted by Cocosnowden on 3/12/2014 at 21:56

Hi All, I'm hoping that someone might have guidance on the best way to "transfer" from Ko Jum to Ko Kradan . So far (from online research), it looks like my best chances are to go from Ko Jum to Ko Lanta via the ferry, then take a boat from Ko Lanta to Ko Kradan. The problem with this is that it looks like boats to Ko Kradan leave Ko Lanta before I'd get there from Ko Jum. Is there a way to do this in one day? Any advice, tips, guidance? Thanks, Coco ...

Thai/Cambodia border crossing: easiest and fastest option from Ko Chang

Posted by JuliaMcD on 29/7/2012 at 18:01

I guess the title is pretty self-explanatory. I am looking for the easiest and fastest way to get from Ko Chang (Thailand) to Siem Reap (Cambodia). Easy and quick, naturally with no gem scam stops on the way. How long does the journey take (more or less), what's the cost? Where and how could I possibly organise a visa for Cambodia before crossing? I heard the officials at the border put rediculous prices on visas and that it would be cheaper to organise one prior to entering the country ? Th ...

3 weeks on the Andaman coast - itinerary

In addition to my first question (http://www.travelfish.org/board/post/thailand/26584_3-weeks-on-the-andaman-coast) i checked all places advised an did some additional reading. I came up with the following itinerary. On the map it looks like an efficient round trip, but have no idea if it will work in real life. I also feel like i may rushing things, so maybe i should skip one place. As other places also sound really good, i also feel like i miss out on some places i didn't include. I would be ...

Can I get some feedback on why my post was deleted?

Posted by samuiintern on 23/6/2012 at 04:31

I added a post to Travelfish this morning asking for some advice. I am looking to invite travellers to work with me in Koh Samui in exchange for accommodation. I won't duplicate my previous post, but in a nutshell I own several websites and I want some help with blogging. I simply wanted to establish whether this was likely to be of interest to people, or whether I was wasting my time exploring this idea. I thought that a site I have used many times myself planning travel in South East Asia wou ...
