Vietnam forum

If you're a first time visitor to Vietnam, we'll point you to the Ha Long Bay thread for points to keep in mind when selecting the right Ha Long Bay tour for you. If you've questions about a potential itinerary, do take a look at the itinerary section of the site as well. We'll also apologise in advance for the persistent spamming by Vietnam-based travel agents -- we do try to delete them as quickly as they come in. Sorry!

WARNING: re Ha Long Bay cruise touts Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/12/2009 at 13:32

We're having ongoing issues banning accounts that belong to Vietnamese travel agents that are spamming the forum pretending to be customers either asking for advice or supposedly giving advice regarding boat tours on Ha Long Bay. The boats most commonly touted are: Columbus Bhaya Phoenix I would treat any comments or advice given concerning any of the above operators with EXTREME CAUTION -- especially if it is from a relatively new site member. As far as I am concerned, if a business ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. Reliable Tour Companies in Vietnam

Posted by Annielay on 6/2/2016 at 19:02

Hello, we are active over 60s and will have 32 days to explore Vietnam and Cambodia from Bangkok in May/June this year. We are thinking of starting from Hanoi and travelling down Vietnam to HCMC, Mekong etc into Cambodia and eventually to Angkor Wat then flying back to Bangkok for our trip home to OZ. There are countless tour companies online and while we normally do independent travel sometimes someone to organise everything and give information about what you are actually looking at is p ...

Cai Be to Chau Doc

Posted by Josha on 5/2/2016 at 19:30

Is it possible to travel via boat / river / water way by boat (from Cai Be or Can Tho) to Chau Doc? We would then continue via fast boat to PP. Most tours put everyone on a bus for this part of the river. I would like to travel on the river to slow down and enjoy the scenery. It does not have to be luxury / commercial. On local transport or hitching a ride sounds good. Is this worth while ? Thanks in Advance ...

Dalat Questions

Posted by BevB on 2/2/2016 at 06:35

Is Dalat worth the effort of getting there? We would be leaving from HCMC and I am guessing a driver is the best way of getting there? What concerns me the most is the amount of time it takes to get to our next destination Hoi An. Around 17hrs by car. Will we get a driver who is prepared to do such a long trip? PLEASE do not suggest motor bikes, its not an option. If we fly, aside from the crazy cost of it, the flight goes back to HCMC to fly to Danang. Any advice would be greatly appreci ...

Small Islands off Rach Gia: Nam Du archipelago or Hon Tre or Hon Som - anyone been?

Posted by Foolslena on 9/8/2013 at 04:06

Hello everyone, has anyone been to one of the smaller islands off the coast from Rach Gia ? Their names are Nam Du Archipelago (biggest island: Hon Cu Tron), Hon Som and Hon Tre. There seems to be a daily boat service there from Rach Gia and you find a little - maybe not so reliable - information on the net on a tour around the Nam Du islands and on accomodation in local guesthouses on Ngang Islet belonging to the Nam Du Archipelago. The journey is supposed to be 5 hours although I don't know ...

Train from Hanoi to Saigon. How much time will I need?

Posted by SnowBird888 on 13/1/2016 at 23:19

Hey there! I'm hoping to take the train from Hanoi to Saigon for my flight out. My flight leaves Saigon on February 28th at 12:55pm. Would leaving Hanoi the morning of the 26th give me enough time and allow for flexibility if there are delays? I was hoping to reach Saigon on the 27th and stay overnight before leaving. I read through the page on here about train travel through Vietnam and it was very helpful, but now I'm just wondering how much time I will need for that specific trip. I would ...

DIY Mai Chau one night

Posted by aritossa on 9/1/2016 at 16:15

My Husband and I plan to travel by ourselves from Hanoi to Mai Chau for 1 night in the end of Jan 2016. Getting there sounds easy enough, we are just concerned about getting a homestay. There is a lot of info and reviews on guesthouses/homestays online, but I wonder if we need to reserve ahead of time? Which is not widely offered for the buget homestays... all we have are the phone numbers. Should we just show up in town, go to one of the choices we have researched and hope its ...

Need transport to Da Nang from HCMC for TET

Posted by canoedaboo on 23/1/2016 at 11:52

So I'm terrible at making plans ahead of time and now I'm paying for it. I need to get to Da Nang by the 5th or 6th of February and apparently so does everyone else. Everything is booked up... I'm new to this site and never traveled in Vietnam before. Are there any websites similar to Craigslist or a way to find ride shares? In other places I've been to it's easy to find other tourists going in your direction and hitching a ride. Or just hitching period. Does anyone have any thoughts about thi ...

Hoi An to Da Nang public bus warning

Posted by ricthomas70 on 23/1/2016 at 05:04

The public bus is a great way to meet locals and experience the country as it is really lived by locals. But BEWARE, westerners are targeted by unethical conductors on the bus who will try and screw you for as much as they can. A commercial transaction is two way... unknowingly many have been extorted from and have inadvertently contributed to this problem... letting this matter slide has lead to extreme and growing demands for money. Our journey to Na Dang they demanded 150% of the legitimate p ...

Avoid The Real Kangaroo Cafe Halong Bay Tours

Posted by Loulou96 on 28/5/2013 at 23:35

Just had a terrible experience with The Real Kangaroo Cafe, Hanoi. In a nutshell, poor quality boat, poor itinerary, bad guides and when we complained (as the itinerary asked us to) we were told by the owner he is a member of the 1%er motorbike gang and would have people waiting for us when we got back from the tour to hurt us (his exact words were more obscene!). When we did get back we were faced with an irate and irrational owner talking over us with a video camera in our faces. Please don ...

Speaking English in Vietnam

Posted by simontran on 11/1/2016 at 09:12

I have just been to Vietnam once; However, thanks to asking many types of people in Vietnam, I find out some useful information: 1. If you just ask for road or aspecific destination near there, you could ask anyone because although they maynot speak Engligh but they can still give you some directions by body language. To make sure that you don’t waste your timedue to asking many people just because there are some Vietnamese who may notknow your requested place or road, ask taxi drivers ...
