Vietnam forum

If you're a first time visitor to Vietnam, we'll point you to the Ha Long Bay thread for points to keep in mind when selecting the right Ha Long Bay tour for you. If you've questions about a potential itinerary, do take a look at the itinerary section of the site as well. We'll also apologise in advance for the persistent spamming by Vietnam-based travel agents -- we do try to delete them as quickly as they come in. Sorry!

WARNING: re Ha Long Bay cruise touts Sticky!

Posted by somtam2000 on 22/12/2009 at 13:32

As far as I am concerned, if a business ...

Hi, I'm somtam2000 and I'll be moderating the Travelfish travel board. I'm here to answer all your questions -- or at least the ones I know the answer to -- as for those that are mysteries to me, perhaps other Travelfish members will be able to answer. You'll see you need to be a member to post a new question or answer an existing one, but if you're already a Travelfish member, you don't need to join again. Your existing login works just fine. A few of general pointers; 1) I do have to ...

We have a few questions on Ho Chi Minh airport(s?) that hopefully someone can answer... At the end of our Vietnam trip we are fly from Phu Quoc to HCM City airport in the afternoon, with an onward international flight that says it departs from Tan Son Nhat in the evening. Want to make sure we have enough time between the two flights that day. - is there only one airport locally ie is Tan Son Nhat the same as HCM City airport (it seems to be so just want to make sure)? - how do we get from Termi ...

I'm planning a 4 week trip to Hanoi, Sapa, Bai Tu Long and Ninh Binh in September/October. Because of the climate differences, I want to stick to that sequence but I realise that all north Vietnam travel seems to involve constant looping back through Hanoi. Is there any way around this? ...

NW Viet Nam

Posted by murph440 on 18/4/2016 at 16:49

We are very experienced independent travelers in our 60's traveling for 6 weeks in VN and 1 +/- week in the NW. We would like to take the night train from Hanoi to Sapa and then on to Son La and Mai Chau before returning to Hanoi . Is this feasible by procuring our own travel arrangements or is a tour/guide necessary. Would buses or cars with drivers be best from town to town? Also, is a guide essential to trek into the minority villages or could this be done on our own. Thanks, murph ...

Overnight cruising in Ha Long Bay to be banned ... soon

Posted by somtam2000 on 11/4/2016 at 00:54

Well the title says it all. Over the weekend Thnh Nien News reported that passenger ships will soon be banned from staying overnight in Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays. They haven't said when this would happen and, looking at some some of the boats, this is probably a good idea. but expect the screams from the cruising industry to be loud and strong. The full story is here. ...

Nam Du Island Ferry

Posted by SamSomewhere on 7/4/2016 at 00:44

Just after having a baffling experience in Rach Gia's Superdong ticket office. Went in, after having done research into the area (a lot through Travelfish), looking to get a ferry to Nam Du rather than Phu Quoc. A very disinterested lady informed me that tickets were "sold out" for tomorrow. Okay, I said, let's do the day after tomorrow. No dice. I whipped out my calendar after a few minutes of her pretending not to see me and asked when I can buy a ticket. "Sold out, sold out ...
