Ninh Binh & Cuc Phuong

Posted by burnthisnow on 10/6/2008 at 23:04

Hi there, I'm in Ninh Binh at the moment and wondering if anyone has any good ideas about the best way to visit Cuc Phuong National Park from here. I really don't feel like hiring a guide, as I'm experienced at hiking and getting around national parks elsewhere, and I'm not dying to drop the money on a driver for a bike or car. I can rent a motorbike, I reckon, but as I plan to overnight in the park, that's a two-day charge. Is there a bus? I'm being told no here.... Thanks! ...

Vietnam - Typhoon (Hoi An and Hanoi)

Posted by Bronkie on 17/11/2013 at 02:09

Hi all. We will be travelling to Hanoi and Hoi An in December. Tickets are booked and our hostel reservations have all been paid for. I'm struggling to contact our hostel in Hoi An, in the past the replied to my message quite quickly. Now I'm not getting responses from them. I wanted to know if things are okay in Hoi An? I mean if they have been hit too bad then I need to book other accommodation and change our itinerary to visit another city. If anybody has been in Hanoi or Hoi An duri ...

Itinerary Cambodia / Vietnam / Laos / Northern Thailand

Posted by schwev on 18/11/2013 at 16:56

Hi All, We are planning a 10 weeks trip Southeast Asia from mid January to March. Some background: We are a couple in their 30's. I like beach, culture and food and my husband likes outdoorsy stuff such as jungles, trekking and nature. We both don't like places overrun by tourists. As it is quite a long trip for us, our budget is low to mid range, ideally boutique accommodation (around £50 a night) with the occasional splurge. We can afford flights between locations and don't need to bus i ...

Some Real Questions About Halong Bay

Posted by cheapswill on 6/7/2006 at 22:30

Hey Everyone, I've been trying to find out some info about touring Halong Bay when I visit Vietnam in October. I thought staying on one of those junks would be cool but the prices I found on line ranged from "too good to be true" to "too much to handle". I don't need to stay in luxury but I don't want to sleep in a leaky barge either. What is a standard price for a comfortable and fun 2 day tour to Halong Bay? Can anyone reccomend a good tour company or agent in Hanoi for this? Is it ...

Train from hanoi to Lao Cai

Posted by Joffarelly on 5/11/2013 at 00:55

I plan to travel with 3 other adults and two kids ( 5 & 7) from Hanoi to Lao Cai on Dec 20th 2013, leaving around 10pm at night. After a long search on the internet I get very conflicting information about prices. A lot of sites quote around $40 for a one-way journey. Then some quote around $25. Why the big difference? I imagine that agencies add a fee but that is a big difference. Would it be better to book when I arrive in Vietnam. Will three days before departure be enough time to en ...

Hanoi to Sapa and back in three days

Posted by nelschrecker on 3/11/2013 at 08:26

Hello all, I have been studying Travelfish for a while now but this is my first post. I am arriving in Hanoi on the 20th of November with my wife and we have a 3D2N Halong Bay cruise booked for the 24th, 25th and 26th. I would like to take the overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa on the 20th, spend the night in Sapa on the 21st and then return to Hanoi on the 22nd. Does this sound feasible? We arrive early on the morning of the 20th, would it be easy to arrange the train tickets when we a ...

[no response from agoda] i ended up at the nearby national park CUC PHUONG which is a beauty and the cheapish accommodation was good enough. if anyone has read this far: the best budget ...

Hey guys/girls I really need some advice so fire away. I'm confused how to get from Halong bay to Dong Hoi. I would like to visit the Phong Kna-Ke caves and spend a bit of time by the national park. I hope to then travel onwards to Danang and then onto Nha Trang to spend a little time on the beach. Ill then go straight on to HCMC. I've got just over 2 weeks to do the whole thing and need the most easiest form of transport. Preferably not flying as I think trains would be the best method. I' ...

Little scammers in VietNam plus a great shave

Posted by m4yb on 1/1/2013 at 02:52

These are no real big deal, but I just thought I would warn others who may fall for them: HOI AN: at the river end of the market, a woman came to me, offering me a pedicure for $1. I hesitated, she was quite insistent, I, naively, thought, what do I have to lose. She led me to a room in a back alley, removed my existing toe nailpolish, trimmed then got me to lie on this couch so she could trim my heels. She declared that my heels needed a lot of trimming, and said "maybe cost a little ...

What to expect when advance booking hotel in Hanoi

Posted by EdwardTrunk on 16/10/2013 at 17:13

I'm hoping soon to book a modest hotel room in Hanoi for 3 days - long in advance, since we're going there fairly soon after Tet. But will Hanoi hotels ask me to hand over debit card details in order to book? I won't use cards overseas for anything but ATMs and I usually bring $ cash for things like paying hotels. What is the norm in Vietnam for making hotel bookings like this? Grateful for any advice. ...

Vietnam and Cambodia - Conflicting Info

Hello. It was recommended at another forum to post these questions here. After several hours of searching and finding conflicting info, I figure I could post several rapid fire questions that educated travelers could easily answer. Will be flying in/out of HCMC with bus trip to Siem Reap in middle. Here goes: 1) Vietnam Visa On Arrival seems like best/cheapest bet as will be landing around midnight and hopefully won't be too much of a wait. Total cost per person should be ~$15 (pre-approval le ...

Hanoi entertainment shutdown this weekend

Posted by travellingsarah on 7/10/2013 at 22:50

As you may know, revered General Vo Nguyen Giap died last week, aged 102. Due to the three days of national mourning in his memory, from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th October, all entertainment events will be cancelled. This is mandatory and includes the CAMA festival and Piknic Electronik. I am trying to find out whether bars will be closed as well and will update as soon as I can. Could be a quiet weekend in Hanoi! I'm not sure of the status elsewhere in Vietnam. ...
