Paludrine for Malaria?

Posted by diliev on 25/6/2012 at 10:58

Hi Folks, I am going to Thailand, Cambodia(Angkor Wat and Phnom Pehn) and Vietnam (Saigon, Mekong river) I decided to take Paludrine (I think another name is Proguanil) for Malaria precautions. Does anyone have any feedback about it? Some websites state it is less effective (~70% effectiveness) than Malarone (~95% effectiveness). Is there any restrictions in terms of how many tablets I can carry with me? Thanks Diyan ...

Has anyone checked out the ethnic markets in Sapa and Bac Ha? Is it worthwhile going to both? Also, has anyone been to the Wednesday market in Cao Son? We read about that place in one of our guide books and wonder if it is worth going so far out of our way? ...

Posted by dlarimer on 19/6/2012 at 23:36

I run into this place when wondering around SG center street at night. At first, I thought the place was not worth visiting since it was kinda small to me plus I had heard a lot about Vietnamese burgers (trust me, they're not the same with the US). so I was hesitated to come in. However, I'm so glad I did!!! I picked the Shrimp Burger (rice!) and the taste of it just blew me away!!!! It was soooo yummy!!! Right on the spot!!! I love love every single bite of it. omg. Weather-Nth Vietnam June

Posted by Benno on 11/6/2012 at 00:02

Hi, I have read on numerous sites that Hanoi in June is hot, humid and wet with the possibility of monsoons. Rainfall in around the 200+mm mark etc etc. HOWEVER, can someone who has been there at this time (or lives there) tell me whether the rainfall is a constant pour or follows the pattern of sun-clouds-downpour-sun. We have a Halong Bay trip and a SAPA trip as well and would like to know so we can pack appropriately and plan stuff. ALSO will this type of weather affect the bay trip (3D ...

I've made a post yesterday about this but it disappeared this morning. We(4 of us) will be travelling to Vietnam for the first time this July. We planning to travel to Hue from Hanoi by train. Should we book the ticket online in advance or we can still get the tickets(air-conditioned soft sleeper, 4 berth) in Hanoi railway station 3/2 days before the departure date? And how much is the price difference between booking online and get it at the railway station? Hope someone can give advice on ...

2 weeks in Vietnam. Is it too much to include 5 cities, or too little? Please critique

Posted by sunbell79 on 8/3/2012 at 23:36

My husband and I will be traveling to Vietnam in a few weeks and have 13 nights to work with. It's our first time to the country and our focus is more on the food, culture, temples, and history than focusing on the American War and it's footprint. We're 30-something year old foodies that want to get a good feeling for the country, just in case this is our only trip to Vietnam. (it's a big world) we also want to make sure we don't come home from the trip exhausted, so a little down time at the be ...

Can Tho-Chau Doc-Phnom Penh??

Posted by cuffedbloke on 26/10/2009 at 12:15

Need some advice here: I'm staying for only a night at Can Tho (will arrive on the evening of 8th Nov) and will do a very early morning boat cruise to the surrounding areas the next day. After that I plan to take the fastest bus to Chau Doc (then stay a night on a floating hotel). The next day I plan to take a speed boat to Phnom Penh. Questions: 1. Should I spend time at Chau Doc since I've already done Can Tho? 2. How much is the speed and slow boat ticket to Phnom Penh? I unders ...

Cristina Cruise/AST Tour review

Posted by Guydj56 on 7/6/2012 at 21:02

Just got back from our Halong bay cruise on the Cristina with the tour company AST. We booked our tour at one of the Sinh cafes in Hanoi a few days prior to the cruise. We opt'd for the 3 day, 2 night option, but we added an extra day on Cat Ba island to do some traveling of our own around the island. After doing some extensive research on Travel Fish and other websites, we decided a midrange cruise would be the best option. The Sinh cafe was selling the 3 day option for $115, but because ...

My husband and I will have our three children (ages 9, 7 and 5) as well as my parents (healthy). Right now I am trying to decide which part of the country to focus on. It will either be the North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, ??) or South Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, ??) I would like to know which region would be most kid friendly? They can only see so many museums, etc. I wo ...

Hi, I'm in Hanoi at the moment and plan to get a bike here and ride all the way through Vietnam, and maybe some of Cambodia. Since I'm traveling alone I only really want to do it if I can find someone to join me, at least for the first part of the journey towards Hue. I have a decent Vietnamese contact to get a good price on bikes, but have also met a couple travelers here sellng bikes that we could test out. I'm going to Halong Bay tomorrow for 2 nights, and will be back in Hanoi on the 28th ...

Hi all! Just doing my research into my first trip to Vietnam, then onto Cambodia... And wanted to thank everyone here for what seems to be a great community of people honestly helping each other! I guess I have bad experiences from certain other forums when organising my several Thailand trips that a place like this seems impossible. I haven't read any negative posts in 2 weeks of lurking! I've already got a healp of great ideas and and when I learn a bit more about SE Asia I'll join you in hel ...

Bad experience at Half Man half noodle in Ha Noi

Posted by Guydj56 on 1/6/2012 at 11:08

Just an FYI. Currently sitting in the half man half noodle bar in Ha Noi and despite travelfish's great reviews of it, it was not at all what it is cracked up to be. First, the music was terrible. We are talking dub step. Almost the whole night. Secondly, lots of cigarette smoke. If you are not a fan, stay away. Finally, couldn't find the special coconut cocktails on the menu and bartender had no idea what they were. Ordered French fries and they were by far one of the worst French fries I've ha ...
