The Paper Lanterns of Hoi An, Vietnam Illuminates at Night

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.” - Vincent Van Gogh

Hoi An is located on the coast of the South China Sea in central Vietnam. It was an important Vietnamese trading center in the 16th and 17th centuries and as a result it is has a mixture of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and French architecture. In 1999 the old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A simple stroll through the old town and you will invariably encounter Hoi An’s iconic paper lanterns. This is what makes the town so special as the lantern’s ambient glow adds to the unique nightly atmosphere.

When I took this photograph the woman vendor offered to get out of the way, but I insisted she stay in the frame because I wanted the interest of a human element.

Happy Travels!
