Gaziantep (Southeastern Turkey, October 2012). In a sidestreet near the castle, I watched this coppersmith practicing his age-old craft. When he found out I spoke Turkish, he invited me to sit down with him for a cup of tea. While I sipped my tea, he showed me the basics of his work and even handed me his tools to try it myself. I can tell you, it's incredibly tough to even hammer a straight line, let alone those Ottoman patterns. He knows the design by heart. And he's fast. Anyway, after an hour or so (and some more tea), he was kind enough to let me take as many shots as I liked. Gaziantep is a wonderful place. Don't skip it on your journey through Turkey.
