Chunchiet Ethnic Minority Village – Northeastern Cambodia, Southeast Asia

Banlung is the provincial capitol for the Ratanakiri Province in Cambodia. Located in the northeastern part of the country, bordering both Vietnam to the east and Laos to the north, it is one of the least visited provinces.

This region is the home of the Chunchiet ethnic minority, which comprise just one percent of Cambodia’s population. They practice animism and ancestor worship and are known for their carved images and monuments they make for their deceased at their graves.

I hired a guide to take me out to one of their villages. You are only allowed to visit with a guide since the Chunchiet are weary of outsiders and in some case threatening (especially if you attempt to visit a cemetery without their prior approval).

From Banlung it was a very bumpy one-hour ride down a red dirt road. Then we boarded a small boat where it was about another one-hour ride.

Since it was the beginning of the rainy season it poured down constantly throughout the day. My guide and I found shelter under one of the local’s hut and we waited for about thirty minutes for the rain to subside. When it did the atmosphere cleared up and I happen to capture this slice of life in a Chunchiet rural village.

Check back for more of my adventures in Cambodia! One more photo in the comment section.

Happy Travels!
