The small village of Cipanas six kilometres north of Garut and 65 kilometres southeast of Bandung is famed locally because of the hot spring water that seeps out of the surrounding earth. As a result, many hotels have been built to accommodate people wishing to bathe in the therapeutic water, with most hotels pumping the water directly into their bathrooms.
Aside from the hot spring water, there really isn't much else in Cipanas and visitors will need to look further afield for activities. This entire area is home to a large number of volcanoes, many of which are still active and regularly belch steam into the heavens. The most popular to visit is Gunung Papandayan, which last erupted in 2002 and has threatened to erupt at regular intervals since.
