Buddha on my mind - Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep; Chiang Mai, Thailand

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is a Theravada Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The temple is often referred to as simply 'Doi Suthep' since it is also the name of the mountain it is located on. The temple is a sacred site to the Thai people and as a result you will see many Buddhists monks (young and old) in devotion and meditation.

I couldn’t help but photograph this monk as it seemed he had Buddha on his mind or at least growing out of his head.

A fifteen-second summary of the life and times of Buddha:

Gautama Buddha (as known as Siddhartha Gautama Shakyamuni) or simply the Buddha was born to a royal family where the king, Buddha’s father, sheltered him from the realities of the world.

Later in life Buddha had a growing desire to experience life outside the royal grounds. One day he escaped past the royal gates and was confronted with disease, death, strife and poverty among his people. Buddha had experienced life as it was and not as it was presented to him from behind the sheltered walls of the royal palace. This would lead to his new life of meditation and teaching, at least in Theravada Buddhism, and would ultimately bring him to Nirvana, a state free of suffering and of full awakening.

Buddha means “awakened one” or “the enlightened one.”
