Located in Northwest Vietnam, Sapa was once a hill station established during the French colonial period in 1922. It now serves as Vietnam’s premier trekking hub.

On my trek to a homestay at the Ta Van village, where we would be hosted by members of the Zay tribe, I saw farmers tending their rice fields, water buffalo wading in mud, and young children playing without a care in the world.

The Hmong people belong to one of the largest ethnic minorities in Vietnam and mainly inhabit the mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. When the French were in Southeast Asia they gave them the name Montagnards or "mountain people."

The Hmong people are distinguished by their clothing and traditions. The Black Hmong are best known for their handicraft and their traditional black dress and headgear. The Red Hmong dress in black as well, but the women wrap up their hair in a red scarf.

This young woman belongs to the Red Dao (pronounced Zao) ethnic minority. She is wearing black trousers embroidered with colorful patterns, a black jacket and a red turban.

I took this photo with my eyes and with the help of my handy dandy, aging Canon Powershot G9.

Check back for more of my adventures in Vietnam!

Happy Travels!
