Chuck Norris Dim Sum
Chuck Norris finds you.
What we say:
We all know that you don’t go looking for Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris finds you. Well, he’s certainly found clubbing central in Phnom Penh and is serving up dim sum to dancers and divas until the early hours of the morning. Almost opposite Heart of Darkness on Street 51 and just around the corner from Pontoon, the target market is pretty clear. And so is the owner’s love of the gun-toting hardman.
Homage wall art demonstrates the link between our beardy hero and tasty Chinese snacks, which may not have been immediately obvious. While some venues around the city can be tricky to find, there’s no missing this place. Open from 19:00 until the clubs have kicked out at 05:00, even the merriest reveller won’t find this branding too subtle. In fact, the only possible confusion would be with Rambo Restaurant (yes, really) on Street 63.
The tough guy theme has also made its way onto the menu. Order the dumpling roulette and see who gets the one that contains very hot mustard. Or ‘Chuck Norris’ the order and have them all teach your tongue a lesson. There’s also a serving of chicken’s feet to sort the boys from the men (or the squeamish from the unfussy). Most of the menu is a more palatable selection of dumplings and momos with pork, vegetables, peanuts and shrimp, perfect for sharing. It’s reasonable value too — each bamboo steam basket comes in at around $2.50 to $3, with drinks from $1 for draft beer.
Chuck’s customer service skills are, how do we put this, unusual. Messages on the menu such as: “If you have food allergies, tough. My dim sum are full of allergies” lead you to believe that the owner Mike has really enjoyed himself putting this offering together. And it’s good to know that “Tea is free bitches!”
Slap bang in the middle of Street 51?s nightlife strip, the vibe is lively and friendly, but certainly not romantic. Chuck Norris’s establishment is perfectly placed as a late-night munchie run with mates who want to ‘get sum’. Dim sum purists or romantics may prefer the Emperors of China close to Olympic Stadium or the Almond Hotel’s Yi Sang restaurant.
