Gianni's

Cosy coffee-house with cafe vibe

What we say: 4.5 stars

The name Gianni's evokes thoughts of a trattoria in the back streets of Rome, but pasta and pizza is not all you will find here.

The expansive list of European food and a smattering of Indonesian favourites is a pleasant surprise for a restaurant in an Indonesian city not reliant on the trade of foreigners. For main course, the salmon steak is hard to go past as are the variety of pasta dishes. If you're craving something sweet the dessert menu offers a fantastic mousse as well some decent cakes.

The ground floor isn't at all spacious, but long wooden tables located upstairs provide ample room for those with large families. The most comfortable spots in the house are the three lounge areas where you can sit on the floor with cushions at your back -- the knee-height artisan wooden tables are a real treat. The dimly-lit and semi open-air space with Balinese-style wooden interior creates a cosy atmosphere that invites you to hang out for hours sipping coffee, gulping beer, or even imbibing wine by the carafe.

This place might be tucked in off the main road in Cihampelas, but it's certainly worth a look if you're craving a drink and some fine food. A cab from the centre of town should cost 20,000 rupiah.
