The Highland Bar

Catch the game at Vientiane's best sunset spot

What we say: 3.5 stars

Further down Fa Ngum, where the river widens, The Highland perches over one of the best riverfront views in Vientiane.

If you're burning to watch the big game, this is the place to go. They'll show just about any sport on their three flatscreen TVs. Due to the time difference, they tend to favour those live in Australia and Europe.

The base of this open-air sports bar and restaurant is a large stilted wooden deck with greenery growing on, through and around it. It’s also adorned with sports jerseys and banners, making it feel like a sports pub in the jungle. If you fancy a bite to eat with your food, the restaurant is open until 23:00 and serves Western and Lao food. With a Scottish owner, not surprising this place has the best fish and chips in town, which, with a view of the sunset and a cold BeerLao, instils a fine feeling of contentment.
