The Highlander Bar

Vientiane's best sunset spot

No pic at the moment -- Sorry!

What we say: 4.5 stars

Further down Fa Ngum, where the river widens, The Highlander lays perched over one of the best riverfront views in Vientiane.

The base of this open-air bar is a large stilted wooden deck with greenery growing on, through and around it. Innumerable sports jerseys and banners, and several flat screen TVs, creates the effect of a jungle sports pub.

If you're burning to watch the next game, this is the place to go. They'll show just about any sport, although due to the time difference, they tend to favour those live in Australia and Europe.

If you fancy a bite to eat with your food, the restaurant is open until 23:00 and serves Lao and Western food. True to the Scottish owner, the Highlander has the best fish and chips in town, which with a view of the sunset and a cold BeerLao instills a fine feeling of contentment.
