Elegant introduction to Lao food

What we say: 4 stars

If you want to try authentic Lao food in an elegant restaurant, head to Amphone. The food is as appealing as the serene setting and it was good enough for celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's introduction to Lao cuisine when he visited in 2008. Dishes like laap, eggplant dip, grilled fish and curries are richly seasoned with fresh herbs and fish sauce and, unless you request it extra spicy, the use of chilli is minimal enough that everyone can enjoy the food. Dine inside with air-con or al-fresco in their pretty courtyard.

Highly recommended is their tasting menu with a glass or two of wine.

Amphone is located just off a small lane leading from Jazzy Brick to Wat Xienghuen.
