Koh Nangkam
The real south Thai and Malaysian deal
What we say:
Don't expect any Singha at this Halal restaurant opposite the Sultan Mosque, just home-style southern Thai cooking.
Favourites like tom yam goong, fried noodles and green curry come in individual or sharing-sized portions and taste authentic, but it's the unique massaman briyani that keeps us coming back for more. It's a little bit Thai, a little bit Malaysian, and very popular — they usually run out by dinner. Koh Nangkam is a cosy spot run by a family from Hat Yai and there's a second dining area on the second floor. They may not serve alcohol but the Thai iced tea and lemongrass drink make up for it.
