The Wok & Barrel

A bistro spin on the classics

Photo of The Wok & Barrel

What we say: 3.5 stars

Started by a hawker from Maxwell Road Food Centre, this new restaurant gives a bistro spin to Singaporean classics.

The spicy rendang pizza and char siew pork sandwiches on homemade bread are guaranteed pleasers and the nasi lemak, the dish that launched chef Madam Tan's career, is a steal at $8 for coconut rice with savoury sides like chicken curry and fish cake.

If you've got a sweet tooth you'll love the French toast with kaya, available all-day on weekends. Prices are lower than you'd expect for the posh area (one of the neighbours is a caviar bar).
