Hai Som Tam Convent
Very popular and very spicy
What we say: 
Packed to the rafters with office workers during the lunch hour, this is the best place in Silom to fill up on Isaan (Northeastern) Thai favourites.
The standards here are marinated and grilled chicken, skin crispy and smoky, a bevy of som tam choices (green papaya salad), and laap of every kind (chopped meat tossed with lime dressing, shallots, and Thai herbs).
Being a local joint, no one speaks very much English, but the staff is kind and patient and the menu is translated. Be forewarned: these Isaan ladies make som tam like they mean it. If you want less fire in your pie hole, you might want to ask for it phet nit noy or mai phet (a little spicy, or not spicy).
Be sure to try the laap ped, an amazing combination of duck meat, shallots, ground toasted sticky-rice, green herbs, fish sauce, and lime juice. It's addictive, and the remaining juices are well worth mopping up with some sticky rice.
